Sweden has NS for boys only but gals can volunteer to serve NS, kind of funny is that alot of them do.
And in term of BMT , both boys and gals actually train and stay in the same barrack. And this intial parade where both sexes go naked infront of everyone, some kind of initiation.
This is what I read from another forum, who said that his batch, the gals were reluntant initially and only went to their undies, but as time went with training etc, the gals also bo chap afterall they shared the same barrack. -
Lets face it, there is not true gender equality...

Good ideas are great but practicality is another thing.
Girls should serve NS.
1.So that most of them who ORD can have better figures.
2.So they dont get too accustomed to ditching their boyfriends who are in NS. I suspect its part of evolution in Singaporean girls. A lot of them are doing that now.
3.So they can serve the nation and be patriotic.
4.So they can get equal pay when joining civil service and not complain of inequality.
5.So that can slow down their education and career progression. -

thing is.. this had been debated in forum before
and many women do support this idea
so the people you need to convince is the government
It was the world wars which pushed women our from the kitchen and home
to take up roles on par with men and eventually staying on to play
important economic roles now
I think many women will stay step up in time of need to play these roles
Volunteerism doesn't start or end with NS. There are many ways women can contribute to society at large.
the question is not whether the women will be willing cos I think enough women will be
but whether enforced NS is the best way for women to contribute to their country, and to be taught patriotism. -

Maybe they can start to introduce so form of militia training for our women folks? Bcos every gun wielding Singapore is a threat to the enemy.

If every healthy female is a trained paramedic or nurse, it could be very good for society. If any emergency occurs like someone gets knocked down by a car or someone suffers an epileptic fit, at least our SG girls can do something useful instead of just panicking.
Besides, I seriously think NS would give our women some sense of nationhood, which is seriously lacking. -

They serve NS at 18 - 20. At that age they shouldn't be giving birth. -

To be a good soldier, one only need to follow orders.
BUT to be a good paramedic or nurse, one needs a lot of training and a degree of smartness and alertness to do the right thing at the right time.
Also, imagine an inapt person being a medic. Wanna IV u also cannot find ur vein. Poke u 2 dozen times liao, ur arm become pin cushion liao still cant find. How?

All women from around the world, from America to Zimbabwe can give birth. This is a natural biological fact.
However, not all countries practice conscription or NS, which is a socio-political policy.
So women should not use the natural ability to give birth as a form of excuse to replace national duty, when not all men around the world serve in conscription. Its like comparing apples with oranges.
The effects of NS in Singapore is obvious - male and female attitudes are indeed different. -

No tks...i prefer the demure, high maintenance SG girl, so there will always be one half of the population that whines more than their male counterparts.
