SINGAPORE SIGNS LETTER OF INTENT FOR JOINT STRIKE FIGHTER PROGRAMME
The Singapore Ministry of Defence and the United States Department of Defense signed a Letter of Intent this morning to mark Singapore¡¯s intention to participate in the System Design and Development Phase of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) programme. The Letter of Intent was signed by Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Mr Peter Ho and Under Secretary of Defense (Acquisition, Technology & Logistics) Mr Edward C. Aldridge, during the 4th Defence Co-operation Committee Meeting in Hawaii. The JSF is a potential candidate to meet the Republic of Singapore Air Force¡¯s longer term operational requirements for a multi-role fighter. The Letter of Intent laid down the broad principles for Singapore¡¯s participation in the JSF programme as a Security Co-operation Participant (SCP). Singapore is the first Asian country to sign a SCP Letter of Intent for the JSF programme.
The JSF programme aims to develop an advanced, multi-role next generation stealth strike fighter to meet the future needs of the US Armed Forces. The stealth fighter will have enhanced combat survivability, precision engagement and lower cost of maintenance. The JSF will be developed through collaboration between the US and several partner countries, including the UK, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands and Turkey.
Technology is critical to the Singapore Armed Forces. The Ministry of Defence collaborates with technologically advanced countries in its drive to make optimal use of technology as a force multiplier. The annual Defence Co-operation Committee (DCC) Meeting oversees the defence technology collaboration between the defence establishments of Singapore and the United States, including areas such as defence R&D and experimentation.
