the avioincs is said to be sensor fusion based......Originally posted by foxtrout8:The in-built avionics shd be at the higher end if to compare to existing multiple role fighters.
The other advantage is that , it is compaitible to all current ATA/ATG weapons in the RSAF's inventory which ease logistics.

cos it'll be quite easy for China to launch some missiles and blow up their runwasy in the first day of war. . .Harrier give them something that will fly without a proper runway. Btw, is the Harrier V/STOL or VTOL? can it both Land AND take-off vertically?Originally posted by duotiga83:is doesn't necessary need a carreir to operate a vtol aircraft.....there's once an article in janes and otehr aviation magazines stated tt taiwan wanted to buy 100 over harriers to operate in their land....

for a2a requirement, i would go 4 typhoonOriginally posted by laser51088:Note that the JSF remians a primarily Air-To-Ground, singapore still need something with dedicated Air-to-air capability IMHO, and what about an interceptor dat can get itself up high in the air very fast?
Harrier can VTOL but if it takes does VTO it wouldn't be able to carry enough weapons and fuel to much so u usually only see these at air shows.Originally posted by laser51088:cos it'll be quite easy for China to launch some missiles and blow up their runwasy in the first day of war. . .Harrier give them something that will fly without a proper runway. The F-35 is just like the F-16, with slighter emphasis on ground strike (for example, stealth features geared towards SAM acquisition radars, radar modes optimised for ground targeting etc) but still a very capable all-round fighter. Its stealth (which for the conventional and naval version will approach the higher limits of the Raptor's, as claimed by L-M engineers) will give it a huge advantage over any conventional fighter. Its range (which will be substantially more than any fighter of its class, due to its very large internal fuel capacity) will give it long endurance in CAP missions. Its avionics, which are integrated (though to a slightly less extent than the F-22's, for the sake of easing future upgrading of the avionics system) will allow it comprehensive situational awareness of the battlespace, giving it the vaunted "first look-first shot-first kill" capability.Originally posted by laser51088:Note that the JSF remians a primarily Air-To-Ground, singapore still need something with dedicated Air-to-air capability IMHO, and what about an interceptor dat can get itself up high in the air very fast?
i think is they typo error...damn disinformation....Originally posted by eurofighter:In today's The Straits Times, the F-35 article says we have 5 F-5 squadrons. This is obiously untrue as we have only 3. Don't they check before printing?

VTOL will means that any neighbourhood (with a police-station , a bus interchange , a school and net work of roads) can be turned into an Airbase in a very short period of time.
Now F-16s can land in prepared LCK road , when we have the F-35 , we can lauch it in almost any 4 lane main road and fields in Singapore. Thats a big advantage.
IMHO, it is one thing to be able to launch and recover a/c from out-of-base locations, but it is quite another matter to refuel, reload a/c.Originally posted by foxtrout8:VTOL will means that any neighbourhood (with a police-station , a bus interchange , a school and net work of roads) can be turned into an Airbase in a very short period of time.

S'pore joins 10-nation warplane projectI thought the RSAF only have 3 F5 Sqns and not five (see above).
Mindef in talks with US on involvement in developing jet
By Chong Chee Kin
SINGAPORE has become the first Asian country to join the biggest warplane programme in history, to develop the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter with the United States and at least eight other countries.
The Republic of Singapore Air Force has 140 planes in two A-4 squadrons, five F-5 squadrons and two F-16 squadrons.
The A-4 is a single-seater attack bomber usually for ground attack. The F-5 is a supersonic jet interceptor that performs a defensive role, while the F-16 handles attack and defence.
