I don't understand why people think SOF over-reacted. Knives are also weapons, and they can kill. Looking back at the events - I thought the hijack was just another joke or drill, until I heard it over the radio. My company (Guards unit) was on standby to move out. Now that I think about it - the SOF people in my unit were not around that night. -
Despite the best effort by the Singapore Government to fulfill the demands from the Pakistani Hijackers, the one demand that the SGP Government could not fulfill was that the Hijackers be allowed to speak to the Pakistani PM - Miss Bhutto.
She declined to take the call, and would not even speak to the Singapore Minister in charge, and had her Officials to discuss the issues with the SGP authorities.
The Pilot was courageous, and used his own initiative to pass information via the Control Tower on the situation inside the plane; using normal "flight talk" as a cover.
He could not ascertain the types of weapons and explosives carried by the Hijackers, but confirmed that the Hijackers had doused the plane and passengers with alcohol - that would have caused an immediate inferno at the spark of a flame, with or without explosives.
Excessive force ?
Easy to judge when the full picture is known after the fact has been established..
It was a poker game that the Pakistani Hijackers tried to play with Professionals, and their bluff was called, and they lost. -

As if Singapore had anything to do with Paki-internal affairs, they picked the wrong guys to mess with. Maybe they tot that Singaporeans were soft? Or maybe the only customs they can get through is the Malaysian airport?
