Suspected Missile Pieces Fall in Turkey

ANKARA, Turkey - Four pieces of what was believed to be a missile fell in southeastern Turkey Friday, a Turkish official said. No one was injured.
The four pieces were found outside the village of Dagyani in southeastern Sanliurfa province, some 180 miles west of the Iraqi border, a spokesman for the local governor's office said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Turkish television channels showed a cylinder-shaped, metallic object resembling a missile lying in a field.
U.S. military officers were heading to the region to investigate, U.S. military spokesman Maj. Bob Thompson said.
On Sunday, two Tomahawk cruise missiles fired from a ship in the eastern Mediterranean landed in an unpopulated area in Sanliurfa province without exploding. Pentagon (news - web sites) officials said they may have malfunctioned in flight. No one was injured.
Turkey, a NATO (news - web sites) member, has opened its airspace to U.S. and British warplanes heading toward Iraq (news - web sites) despite fierce opposition by Turkey's public. Turkey refused requests to base 62,000 U.S. ground troops in the country.
