RMAF jet blows tyre, skids off runway

KUCHING: A fighter jet belonging to the Royal Malaysian Air Force skidded on the runway of the Kuching International Airport here, yesterday.
The RMAF has not issued any statement on the incident but, it is learnt that the multi-purpose F-18D Hornet had a punctured tyre which caused it to skid on the runway upon landing.
Pilot Mohd Nor Rashid Samingin, 41, and his assistant, Abdul Wahab Ayub, 31, ejected from their seats for a safe exit from the plane amid a downpour during the 4.30pm incident.
Several fire engines from the Fire and Rescue Department and the airport's own fire brigade, rushed to the scene after being alerted.
The two pilots, it is learnt, were immediately taken to the Sarawak General Hospital for observation.
The plane was one of six craft from the RMAF base in Labuan that had been carrying out an air exercise here since the past week, ahead of the Miri Air Carnival tomorrow.
According to a witness, there was an explosion as the plane was about to land.
The incident caused disruptions to several scheduled commercial flights at the airport

Probably the landing gear would need some serious work at the very least if not total change. New ejection seats and canopy is a must. I was not there and am not in position to judge, but looking at the photo damage seems light and would probably be confined to the landing gear. I wonder if it would have been wiser for the aircrew to stay with the plane till it came to a complete stop, rather than carry out what seems (looking at the pic) a premature ejection. -

just a thought, how do they removed the punctured tyre, by lifting the hornet up on a crane? interested to know how they replaced it -
canpoy looks intact leh....as for the plane...they will lift it on to a flatbed and fix it from a propose built lift.....i saw them doing the same thing to an Airbus in changi airport.....the 1 that over shot the runway

Pretty paranoid eh, the pilots... a blowout wun usually cause a plane to fireball wat... unless it flips and cartwheels or something like that.
But it looks pretty intact to me... -
How can a canopy of a plane be intact after an ejection is beyond me. In ejections the canopy is either blown off by a small explosive charge before the seats are fired with the pilots in them milliseconds later (eg F-16) or a suitably large headrest is used to shatter the canopy when the ejection seat fires (eg A-6 Intruder). Ejecting from an F-18 while mid-flight as the plane attempt to land on a hard runway ?
What happened to the plane that remain very much intact ?
Did it continue its flight path WITHOUT any pilot ?
Did the engines flame out - as there was an explosion heard ?
If the plane still maintained engine power, who shut down the plane engine after it descended onto the runway - assuming it continued its glide or flight path ?
Amazing that this US built jet could remain largely intact, while it came down to earth WITHOUT the pilots.

From a fleet of 8 Boeing F-18, now only 7.
Some wonderful attrition rate within a period of about TEN Years.

it is from 18 MiG-29s to 17 MiG-29
and that hornet an be fixed.
its just a minor damage.
that hornet can still be used. its not broken or anything like that. -

That Hornet is gonna need some repairs... but it dun look like a write off...

The F18 has a tough airframe made for carrier landings, but with the 2 pilots ejecting from the cockpit, the electronics within must be fried. My guess is the aircraft will be out of action for some months.

Accidents happen, but that will not help RMAF's track record and image. I wonder why did the pilot eject. AC looks relatively in good condition...
- If the pilot ejected before touchdown, I doubt the plane would still be looking like that.
- If the pilot ejected after touchdown, what forced him to eject rather than stay with the plane (which is already safely on the ground)? It would take a serious problem to make the pilot risk the ejection. -

or maybe the pilot and his WSO ejected because the a/c could have caught fire and exploded due to friction or something else.
just to be safe- the pilot and WSO are just like you and i, they also dont want to die or get injured. not their fault

the crash is just at the runway- its not on the battlefield or behind enemy lines. the response team is just at the airport/air base.

Bad news for the Malaysians, F-18 landing gears are said to be 100 percent more reliable then that of previous US Navy aircraft like the F-14 or the A-6. If they are able to crack it...
