Combat experiences of our immediate neighbours.

Hi guys, I've been reading around at all major military forums. I found out that a lot of our neighbours state that they had fought wars before. Just what wars did they fight?
I heard that one of our first infantry division fought with Indonesians during the early days and Ex CDF Winston Choo is rumoured to be from that batch. Hmm. So he's the only general we had with combat experiences, right?
Thailand and Vietnam fought among themselves in early 1980s, heard that when I was a little boy. And Vietnam also fought US and Russia depending which side they are on. Correct me if I'm wrong, thanks. -

as far as combat experience is concern,
singapore, IMO, fared badly as compared
to , say, phillipines malaysia thailand or indonesia.
sad to say, the furthest combat experiences that our
stars ever had would be the exercise tiger balm.
but then again i dun know how things have changed these days. -

Philippines Army fought/fighting against Seperatists and communist rebels. I think still on-going
Thai Army found again the Vietnamese who were occuping Cambodia. The Vietnamese have left Cambodia already. Sometimes there is a bit of fighting with their border with Burma, when Burmese troops crossed the Thai border to attack Karen seperatists.
Malaysian Army found against the communist rebels in the Northern Jungles bordering Thailand. But the last communist surrendered many years ago.
Indonesian Army fought against seperatists in Aceh, Irian Jaya and East Timor (independent no more conflict). -
The early days that our units fought was the days of the 1st and 2nd SIR during the confromtation days but that was during the 60's and most of the people too old liao so i doubt any of them are left.
1st SIR was depolyed to Sabah while the 2nd SIR was depolyed to Johore.Both had combat expriences while depolyed.I believe thats all however the commandos MAY have been depolyed in recent times but i'm not sure if they faced action.The Indonasians,Thais,Cambodians,Vietnamese and the Filipinos are all fighting currently in some conflict or another.The Indonasians in Aceh and Irin Jaya.The Cambodians among themselves,the Vietnamese armong themselves.The Thais with the drug lords and pirates.Filipinos with the rebels.So i'd rate all of them as having pretty good combat experiences -
Most of our neighbours have fought counter-insurgency wars before and are very experienced in it. Some are still doing it while others have successfully won, a long time ago.
However, none have seen an all-out conventional modern war, whereby, an opponent has a proper army, navy and air force. (maybe Vietnam has)
Singapore has not fought any real wars recently and requires foreign advisors to provide knowledge and skills.
In my opinion, a country may have fought wars in the past but not all current soldiers have seen war. For example - in the current Gulf war and in Afghanistan, the majority of US troops have never seen action before. Only the senior NCOs and older officers have. -

a full conventional war.... those kind of war.. like the WW2, gulf war and korean war.. is not something any nation can fight on a regular basis.... else their economy long kaput liow...
COIN operations while does provide realistic engagement... lacks the tempo, numbers, stress, command complexity and techonological levels found in a full conventional war...
take malaysia for example, i sincerely cannot imagine chasing 27 old man along the thai malaysia border for over 20 years as commendable war "experience"
lastly, combat effectiveness is not determined based on war experience alone.. iraq's veterens simply fell and humbled by young punks in the US army....whose probably real war experience is little more then shooting off at counterstrike.... -

You can see it when one of our neighbours stated they are something like combat hardened in the AFM forum. Are driving APCs and not exposed to direct gun fires considered as combat proven? I'm not referring to Mogadishu like Black Hawk Down. Just asking only.

For COMBAT experience, I guess that there are varying degrees of experience gained.
For example, the peacekeepers who are stationed in Cyprus have definately less excitement than those stationed in Sierra Leone.
And so even if a country sends contigents to both conflicts, one group of soldiers will have more experience in conflict and combat compared to the other.
Malaysia, sending troops to Bosnia, probably had less experience gained there compared to Somalia.
Definately the Thais who fight the Myanmarese and the Philippinos who fight the Communists and the Indonesians who fight the Acehnese have more experience. If nothing else, they know how to survive a real shooting incident where both sides are really trying to kill each other.
So if we were to rank "Combat" or "Fighting to Death" situation, I will put
a) Myanmar (fighting drug lords)
b) Vietnam (fighting China)
c) Indonesians (fighting Aceh)
d) Philipinos (fighting Abu Sayaff)
e) Thais (fighting Myanmar)
f) Malaysians (Peacekeeping duties)
g) Singaporeans (Peacekeeping duties)
h) Cambodians (donno what they do)
i) Laos (donno what they do)
j) Bruneians (hire gurkas to do the fighting for them) -

The biggest screw ups were the americans. Going in alone without backup.
As for screw ups, I did not know the Malaysians were even experienced with armoured vehicle operations back in Somalia time, so putting them in a Rapid Reaction Force was some kind of UN command cock up.
The MAF Battalion sent to Somalia and Bosnia are foot soldiers. Same with the Pakistanis.
Never mind, lessons learnt by them. Maybe thats why they bought all the ACV300 and PT91 .. so that they won't cock up any more. -
i might be missing something but how did Malaysian troops screw up in Somalia?
I thought they were the ones who rescued the Americans troops who were trapped?( this was not shown in Black hawk down)
If not for the Malaysians who went in and rescued the Americans, i bet at least half of them would be dead.
We lost a man in Somalia. Respect that. Stop saying we screwed up when we were the actual heroes.
