'ASTRA' testfired for the first time from ITR
Balasore, Orissa, May 9 (UNI) India today for the first time successfully testfired air-to-air short range missile 'ASTRA' from the Integrated Test Range(ITR) at Chandipur-on-sea, about 15 kms from here.
According to ITR sources, the guided missile, having a striking range between 10 to 25 km, was testfired at 1215 hours.
Developed indigenously by the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), the missile, ITR sources said met the mission successfully.
This was the maiden testfire of the missile from the ITR which, sources said, had been developed keeping in view the three-pronged defence system for metropolitian cities, particularly after the September 11 incident.
