China's first aircraft carrier enters service
25 September 2012
China's first aircraft carrier has entered into service, the defence ministry says.
The 300m (990ft) Liaoning - named after the province where it was refitted - is a refurbished Soviet ship purchased from Ukraine.
For now the carrier has no operational aircraft and will be used for training.
But China says the vessel, which has undergone extensive sea trials, will increase its capacity to defend state interests.
China's Premier Wen Jiabao said the ship would have "a mighty and deep significance". It would be "a cause for patriotic passion", he said at a ceremony attended by top Chinese leaders at Dalian Port.
The delivery of the aircraft carrier comes at a time when Japan and other countries in the region have expressed concern at China's growing naval strength.
China and Japan are embroiled in a row over disputed islands in the East China Sea.
Several South-east Asian nations are also at odds with China over overlapping territorial claims in the South China Sea.
It also comes weeks ahead of a party congress expected to see the transition of power to a new generation of Chinese leaders.
'Defend interests'
The Liaoning was formally handed over to the navy at a ceremony in Dalian, state-run Xinhua news agency said.
"Having the aircraft carrier enter the ranks will be of important significance in raising the overall fighting capacity of our nation's navy to a modern level," the defence ministry said in a statement.
The vessel will "increase [China's] capacity to defend, develop its capacity to co-operate on the high seas in dealing with non-traditional security threats and will be effective in defending the interests of state sovereignty, security and development", it added.

In a startling disclosure, a top US Admiral has revealed that China offered to divide the Pacific and Indian Ocean regions between China and the US after Beijing launched its own fleet of aircraft carriers.
The offer was made by an unnamed top Chinese Navy officer while discussing the country’s ongoing aircraft carrier programme, one of the senior-most officers of the US military, Pacific Command (PACOM) chief Admiral Timothy J Keating said. He added that the incident was disclosed to Indian Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta during their meeting on Thursday.
Keating said that the offer, which was made somewhat “tongue in cheek” was declined by the US but the top Chinese officer indicated that Beijing would pursue the development of aircraft carrier technology.
“We (Keating and Mehta) talked a little about the potential development of a Chinese aircraft carrier. I related (to Mehta) a conversation I had with a senior Chinese Naval officer during which he proposed, in his words, that as China builds aircraft carriers — he said plural — we can make a deal,” the PACOM chief said after meeting the top Indian military leadership besides the National Security Advisor and Foreign Secretary.
The proposed “deal” envisaged that after China has its own aircraft carriers — it remains the only major naval power currently without such a capability — the Pacific region could be divided into two areas of responsibility.
“(The Chinese officer said) You, the US, take Hawaii East and we, China, will take Hawai West and the Indian Ocean. Then you will not need to come to the western Pacific and the Indian Ocean and we will not need to go to the Eastern Pacific. If anything happens there, you can let us know and if something happens here, we will let you know,” Keating recalled.
Keating and Mehta also discussed the recent “aggressive” tactics of Chinese vessels against US Navy warships operating in the East China sea. Calling the tactics, which were described in reports as very close passes and attempts to block US warships by Chinese vessels, as “irresponsible”, Keating said that he and Mehta viewed them with “concern”.
countries, businesses must realise that we only should tap profits by investments in china, we cannot allow such a big country, getting richer, but still have a big population of hungry greedy people, to trife in their military. one main weakness about japan in the past was their country landsize- small, in the end still manageable. but china is big, and their history has shown that they like to siagree and fight, using propaganda to achieve their ends.
when they claim they need an aircraft carrier to patrol their seas, it actually mean their sea is as big as the distance able to be covered by the aircraft carrier, meaning?
the whole of south china sea theirs! forget their claims about no aircraft lah - it might be bull. once they load their plaes on baord and travel out to sea, it can mean war! watch just watch.
can we have some more deails about the carrier? what fule powered it, planes capacity, levels and tiers, how many plaes it can carry, speed, and numebr of days it can stay at sea, crew capacity etc?
weapons on board? dispalcemnts etc etc
300m is too small and light
i rather they build it the same size as the Nitmiz class--100k displacement
armanents? IMO, i rather put vertical launched missiles, anti-submarine rockets and loads of CIWS as much as possible
mos aircraft carriers have light - short range weapons. the main offensive and defensive weapon is its ability tocarry a large crew for tis oepration and travel for prolong time at sea, and the number of aircraft it can take to freely launch them to the skies for recon, deploying a circle of defence, or lauccnhing an attack as offence before enmy approaches.
but i think the crew matters most. theory aside but now the cheena men onboard still lacks the battle experice at sea, and also the test of their damage control personnel and spirit on board. hope they take in some cockhead soldiers as such
with bigger displacement, the carrier will be bigger in size to house more powerful weaponry....hey, if i am the president of china, i will want to have a couple of ICBMs on board
anyway, the chinese aircraft carrier needs loads of combat experience....they could be sent to places of unrest.................
i think they worry about their own country's crimes and problems first, this carrier really for what? defend their sea? seems like their sea very big
If Asia Pacific , Australia, New Zealand and the United States Pacific forces go to war with China...I would gladly Enlist as a full time in SAF to join the Coalition to fight the Chinese
no need lah. all tehse countries just pull out their businesses can oredi.
Tell the Chinese to Kiss my Ass.....They are not going to Expand in Singapore....I will take down many of your PLA troops before i die
you can do your part by reporting any illegal or probalematic cheena yousee in singapore, or go command check out ulu areas for similar illegal iimigrants or overstayers. report to authorities. until war we can start kicking butts.
