Hi I hope nobody minds me reopening this topic (Previous topics have expired). I think it is more relevant now that the US has been ordering a whole spate of drone attacks amidst their war on terror, muchmuch more than during the Bush administeration.
I am aware that Singapore currently uses drones (or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, UAVs) in the military for surveillance/ recon. They've been buying a few from Israel, and Singapore's defence minister even stated that expenditure on UAVs is expected to double.
So, is it a possibility that Singapore will move on from surveillance UAVs to actual drones equipped with weapons? US is currently selling their combat drones to other countries - does this pose a pressure on Singapore to keep up?
On a side note, I am thinking of exploring this topic for an assignment, but this idea was rejected by my teacher who stated that it is not relevant for Singapore, and Singapore will not use combat drones. She suggested I switch to Nuclear-Powered submarines instead, which I personally felt Singapore will never use. But that's another topic altogether. :D
My guess is the biggest problem singapore govt will face is more legal than anything else. Key point being Some bullshit about the "unethical", risky nature of combat drones started by some pussy hippies and its giving washington alot of geadache with running the drone program. About how innocent civilians are put at risk by drones. So robots are less accurate than human pilots? Less mobile? I call bullshit ;)
Simple reasob: if the world refuses to accept usa's combat drones as acceptable, u think indo and malaysia, two not-so-rich, paranoid neighbours with bullshit equipped armies will allow singapore? Will ASEAN allow? Ask urself why we dun even have air craft carriers. Singapore is more tgab able to afford anything, even nuclear weapons if need be. But u nid to rmb Singapore is NOT like USA, alone and isolated. We have to consider how our dear dear neighbours think abt it too.

if u want it i can build u a combat drone that thinks by itself but its unarmed.it only needs to be programmed which is quite easy to most real IT guys.
Thought of setting up my drone factory a decade ago but like all people was too busy werking and put things on hold.
u need to program it to take off which is quite simple once u load it to take off ramp or runway.then u need to program it to think for itself at any altitude and when n where ut should go.
then u need to enable it to remote control to a human user which i find is only good if u are dealing with terrorists who are not armed with enough tech stuff.
say if u need to strike a supermarket downtown because u found it too expensive.....u could send it up...then it will fly to coordinates using a gps or even a data recog software thats found in markets to id place. then u could fire n break hell on target.when thats done it could fly back to base automatic from start to end.but most folks would rather they let a human press the fire button.
the only thing to worry is to get the powerplant for the drone and some construction.not a big thing
Dear frens, SG have some.
