Total suspends exploration work amid Brunei-Malaysia spat
KUALA LUMPUR - French oil company Total said on Monday it had suspended exploration work in an oil block off Borneo due to a territorial dispute between Malaysia and Brunei.
Total, leader of a consortium which last year won a Brunei tender for one of two huge offshore blocks, said it was ''surprised'' that Malaysia had entered territorial claims on the area.
Work had been halted to await the outcome of discussions between the two governments, said chairman and chief executive Thierry Desmarest.
''Exploration was suspended a few weeks ago,'' he told reporters on the sidelines of an Asia oil and gas conference here.
''We are surprised to see it is contested by another country. Under international practices, the waters are legitimate to Brunei. I hope at the end of the day there will be an amicable solution.''
Brunei last year awarded one block to Total and its partners US Amerada Hess and Australian BHP Billiton, and the other to Anglo-Dutch giant Royal Dutch/Shell group, involving Mitsubishi and ConocoPhillips, the New York-based International Oil Daily reported on Monday.
Since early this year, however, the deepwater blocks have also been claimed by Malaysia whose state-owned oil firm Petronas awarded identical acreage to US Murphy Oil and its own subsidiary, Petronas Carigali, the publication of the Energy Intelligence Group said.
A drilling team from Total was chased off the block by the Malaysian navy in March, according to the Oil Daily, quoting reports from a Brunei newspaper.
The contested area represents about half of Brunei's entire offshore territory and is vital to its plans to diversify its oil-dependent economy.

Haha... I remember Tom Clancy writing a seneriao about Malaysia foolishly invading Brunei in the non-fiction book Marine, and the Malaysians proceed to get horribly trashed by the USMC. A good read, even if somewhat escapist.
Anyway, to little surprise, I could not find that book when I was in Malaysia. -

i must say, brunei really kenna bully this time round.. technically they cant challenge the malaysian navy... and i wonder what are the options available to them...
while SAF might protect their east brunei... i dont think SAF is gonna send our RSAF and RSN over to kick those dreamers' butt...
but i could be wrong... maybe SAF would send something over... in view of the joint singapore and brunei currency...
OR maybe brunei could seek american protection in return for oil... that would really trash malaysia's face.....

Before commenting on the situation, one will need to study the background to the claims, the maps, and territorial entitlements based on political and economic considerations as allowed for under UN Law of the Seas Rulings.
Given our own experience with the Malaysian claims over Pedra Branca, and learning the background issues on the disputes between Malaysia and Indonesia over two small islands off the Sabah coasts, it is not too surprising that Malaysia will make any attempts to stake a claim whenever they can.
With luck, they may repeat what they have done to the Indonesians. -

Despite Bruneis apparent military inferiority I doubt the present Malaysian government will dare to attempt any military takeover of any part of Bruneis territory. The same can be said about Singapore, Indonesia or anyone in ASEAN thinking about attempting military adventures into other countries. Its just not worth it to do such things in the present context
As it is, even though ownership is disputed, it is still internationally recognised sovereign Bruneian land, any attempt to change the staus quo will undoubtedly raise international heckles, more so bearing in mind Brunei's resources.
Atobe, Malaysia won Indonesia to Sipadan and Ligitan because the ICJ ruled in favour of "Status Quo". If by applying the same standards, an ICJ ruling will likely favour Brunei since it has always been administered by Brunei.
Unless theres something I don't know about yet...As Atobe has said, we still don't know a lot of the facts

Plenty of malaysians still dun even see Singapore as a seperate country, just an island they were force to conceed now under PAP control. If ultranationalistic elements take root in Malaysia, esp. some jokers who want Singapore to be considered a rouge nation like Taiwan and China (good luck getting that past the UN).
If we hadn't a strong military and were pacifist, and had nothing notable to offer the world, I think we will be swallowed liao. -

This thread is about a territorial dispute between Brunei and Malaysia, not about Singapore vs Malaysia. I hope everyone keeps it that way and keep it civil. And that means everybody.

Most people speculated that the issue was Limbang, actually it was to discuss the dispute of the overlapping claims on the EEZ. Chances are some form of sharing arrangement will be made on whataver oil that they might find.
Most people in M'sia feels that how can a small country like Brunei have unlimitless amount of oil....unless the oil field actually comes from M'sian territory....i.e. the oil drills maybe in Brunei, but the oil field may overlap into M'sia....its like 2 straws in a cup of drink, the one that suck first suck most of the drink ......of course this is mere speculation. -
