S'pore fighter jet 'screeches' to emergency landing
AN A4 Super Skyhawk fighter jet (like the one in the file picture below) from the Republic of Singapore Air Force suffered a mechanical failure and made an emergency landing at the Tengah Airbase yesterday afternoon.
The plane was slightly damaged and the pilot was not hurt.
The New Paper was alerted by a passer-by, who said he was surprised to see a plane looking like it was touching down without its landing gear out.
He called and said he could not see what happened to the jet when it touched down because the airbase's runway was not visible from the public road.
'I heard a screeching sound. There was no explosion and it just went silent after that,' he said.
When contacted, a Ministry of Defence (Mindef) spokesman confirmed that the Skyhawk jet had made an emergency landing at 11.54 am yesterday.
'It experienced problems during a routine training exercise,' she said, adding that the damage to the plane was minor and that the pilot was not hurt.
Mindef will be conducting an inquiry to determine the cause of the incident, she added.
Super Skyhawks have taken part in the traditional flypast at National Day Parades. -

the aircraft suffered some minor scratches, some aerodymanic smoothener and a fresh coat of paint later and you won't even notice. On the other hand, the two wing drop tanks are good for the scrap heap.

i remember in 1999...there was a news story about decom'd skyhawk airframes piled high at a scrapyard opposite jurong camp that attracted the attention of nuts like myself. Had a field day climbing around. By then most of the important parts of the cockpit like the joystick have been removed...

western Singapore is almost always buzzing with jets and helos.
As for the apparent witnessing of an e-landing, did the guy saw
any smoke or heard any explosion after the A4 dissappeared
behind the treelines at Tengah ? In all likely senerio, the pilot
probabaly elected to belly land the jet rather than bailing out.
Question is based on the paper report and witness possible
location, did ATC allowed a troubled plane to use S-N landing
pattern that overflew populated area ? Wouldn't it better to use
the Changi airport instead where longer runway and over water
approach provides a better and safer option ? -

Anyway... There is no way to observe Tengah Airbase activities from the roads around it. Very clever terrain moulding by our good Air Force. Saw some buggers flying remote control planes around the area though... don't know if they are spying with home made UAVs or not. -
tengah really isn't that tight... it only looks tight on the outside... we hear really worrying things about that place all the time...
u can't see inside, but it really doesn't mean that its invulnerable to sabotage. a little bit of snooping around in newsgroups like these, talking to some people who've served in there before over a few beers and u would have a skeleton plan and some very juicy targets already...
not that i have no faith in our security or that i'm giving JI any ideas, but they might do just that if they were serious about hitting any target... -

remote planes in the area?! WTF?! they can be fined for that sia.......heck i cant even use my remote contorl car near air bases! cuz of my freq.......it's quite close to the Air contorl freq....(btw my remote car is those run on petorl kinds range up too 4km i think or 8km)

I dunno... I was on the back of a tonner while heading to Gedong for duty. Saw this thing which I THOUGHT was a bird. Then after watching carefully, birds don't do barrel rolls...
And it was flying in a circuit pattern... Climb, right turn... Roll, dive, swoop low, turn again.... climb again. -

No no no. I really saw a remote controlled aircraft flying near Tengah AB. Unfortunately, I couldn't see who was flying it.

yah... maybe... tot the 128sqn r stationed there? with remote spy planes.... maybe its their UAV... or some improvised UAV for training purposes
