Its because the powers-that-be have neglected to impress upon us at an early age, what the words to the anthem mean and what they stand for.Originally posted by tripwire:or isit that the anthem has failed?
how many countries are there in this world... where a huge proportion of citizen needs to "FIND OUT" what their national anthem lyrics means??Originally posted by wuming78:i guess one reason is how he said hearing the national anthem actualli made him feel something inside.
and another is how he bothered to go and find out.
its not that alot of people dun understand bahasa melayu. the translations are everywhere. its whether one is bothered or interested enuff to find out wat his/her OWN national anthem means, instead of going thru the motion of singing it for years while in school.
well. i never did any studies on how many people out there found out about their own national anthems. i jus thought as citizens should be interested enuff to go and find out ourselves if we dun noe. of course i am equally guilty in the past of being apathetic.Originally posted by tripwire:how many countries are there in this world... where a huge proportion of citizen needs to "FIND OUT" what their national anthem lyrics means??
if not alot of people dun understand bahasa melayu... WHY even bother to have translations everywhere?? arent you contradicting yourself??
lastly... would you sing ANY song over and over again for decades with spirit WHEN you dont even know what the freak you mumbling about??
the problem here is the ability to attach EMOTION to the MEANINGS of the words AS YOU SING the national anthem!!!
just go to any school in the morning and you will hear the national anthem being sung with a MONOTONOUS.... TONE.. IF they even BOTHER to sing in the first place...
yeah, 'the root, the fundamental and soul of the nation' happens to be in malay. How to feel patriotic when it is played if the words can't be understood it in the first place? If I understand you, we have to learn to understand the words in malay because the national anthem is in malay. . . now THAT is shallow thinking... the anthem is still something that was created by one man and modified by a few for singapore. if it is not able to have the impact on the populace that it was intended to have, then why is it our national anthem?Originally posted by kanzer:The national anthem is the root, the fundamental and soul of the nation. Anyone out there that suggest that we can the anthem or lyrics into English obviously have a lack of appreciation for the national anthem. We need to ask ourselves whether do we need to change just because most of us cannot understand or speak Malay. If the answer is yes, that is pretty shallow. The national anthem and flag is a symbol of the country. This is what we are. We don't change just because we want to move with times or appeal to future generations or because we don't understand it. The onus is on the population to learn and appreciate it and not the other way round.
the national anthem, the state flag and national flower are all points of rallying our people. these have been composed, created or chosen around the times when we were declared independent. due to the special circumstances surrounding our existence, they were chosen and created as what they are now. we really cannot divorce the context out of their creation. we must also not forget the national language and the reason it was chosen. so i think naturally the anthem would be composed in the same language.Originally posted by laser51088:yeah, 'the root, the fundamental and soul of the nation' happens to be in malay. I do feel something when the flag is raised or during the fly past of the flag on national day. i feel the same when i see the crest proudly displayed. But i sing the anthem cos i have to... no choice. . .
no lah.. of course not. tts not wat i meant. anyway their argument is more of changing the language than changing the anthem.Originally posted by NeonTetra:we need to consult Encik Zubir Said whether he want to compose a new song for us??![]()
now that itself reveals your shallow mentality. have you put in the effort to learn or have the national education that the state has innoculated on you failed. the meaning of the national anthem is taught if you ever go to a national school. in fact they teach you since primary school. so do not blame the swimming trunks is tight if you do not know how to swim. have you ever put in the effort to learn and understand? your statement obviously tell me that you have not.Originally posted by laser51088:yeah, 'the root, the fundamental and soul of the nation' happens to be in malay. it is also not too late to change the mentality that this is a sacred cow.Originally posted by kanzer:it is time for you to broaden your thinking and not restrict to the view that if i do not understand things, it has to change just because i do not understand. now isn't this thought itself shallow? obviously you do not take pride in the anthem.... it is not to late to change this going-through-motion type of mentality.
Well, i stand corrected. Anyway it's interesting to know that the star spangled banner has such a humble originOriginally posted by Gedanken:The point is that the history of the Star Spangled Banner is not quite as grand as that portrayed by IAF, and chances are that it was questioned back then in the same manner as we are currently questioning Majulah Singapura.
