Sorry to disagree, but the SAR80 was used to some extent in log units, at least when i did my NS in the mid nineties. In any case, I had to use one for two years.
Personally, i cannot say that the SAR80 was any more accurate then the M16 i used in BMT. However, this is probably due to the fact that i was an average shot in BMT and my scores on the range were no different when i used the SAR. However, i had some guys who did score better shots on the SAR80, but they put it down to the fact that the SAR was heavier, and so it didn't shift too much on the recoil.
Unfortunately, most of us felt the rifle was cumbersome to use, mainly due to the fact that the rifle was not very ergonomic. For example, the SAR80 had no handle and had a large square cross-section, which made it difficult to grab, unlike the M16.
The upshot was that the rifle was always easy to clean, since most of the dirt got caught in the regulator anyway. However, since the rifle was mainly used for guard duties and ranges, its robustness was not really tested. However, despite the numerous ranges i went for, the darn thing never IA'd once.
Hope this helps.
