i asked one before.. they are on a 27-year contract because they are recruited at 18...
each carries a Kukri as a personal close combat weapon as well as a symbol of their status as a Gurkha...
oh, and they are all stupendously fit... the military fellas... ever see them clear the SOC as a section carrying ALL the section support weapons? these guys were like 5 and a half feet tall, carrying their own weapons as well as GPMGs, 84mm and all that, clearing the SOC without seeming to be breathing hard!

Gurkhas guard the Istana loh....they are also deployed in operations when the terrain is more into Jungle or Densed Vegetations. They serve quite a long time here before they get their pension and go back to Nepal to enjoy their old age. 1 thing for sure, they are very fit. They are very polite, disciplined and respect fellow POs too. They are nice guys, at least they seem to me.

there used to be a gurkha guarding the newly built australian school on lorong chuan.
there also used to be gurkhas guarding the causeways 2 years ago after 9/11

Isn't the Gurkhas part of the police? Then why are they seen training with GPMG and 84mm while clearing SOC? Are they trained to be soldiers like they are in the other parts of the world eg UK and Brunei?

dunno man, long time ago, when i was doing my BMT, they were running the SOC in Tekong... i remember coz the PC was saying that they are damned fit.. and they had Kukris...
oh, i've seen Gurkhas at Woodlands Checkpoint.. they're still there

Both SAF and SPF have Gurkhas

Dunno whether there is Gurkhas in the SAF but they are certainly trained in military tactics , seen them in SAF range for their markmanship training,lead by a British officer(Lt Col).
Their rank and insignia are British and senior a Gurkha with a rank of Corporal act like a CSM in a Gurkhas platoon.
It used to have camp (tekong camp 2)in Tekong for training in the eighties(dunno whether they are still there now).
They might be visiting British Gurkhas unit for training just like what we do in Brunei, or might be they are employed by Sg with seconded British officer in charge. -
all i know is that they are tamade fit...
and the weight the carry is... well, heavier than your FBO.
What's more some are not that big size too... -

Yea just a few years ago when I was at Pasir Labar Camp, I witness these Gurkha soldiers in green fatique clearing the SOC ground near pengkang hill twice while their british officer looked on, and their timing was less than 9mins. kukri is their weapon. if they draw it out, they must let the blade 'taste' blood b4 they can shealthe it back....

My fren in the PDF says last time during and exersise the Gurkkas were sent as the opfor while he was guarding a communication station.

They were selected and train by the British like any other gurkha in the British Army. My friend in SPF even told me that their paymater are the British and not Singapore. -
I heard the same thing - the Gurkhas have some infantry training by the British. But they are hired by the police force in Singapore for police duites. They even wear the British tropical DPM camo uniforms in the field. Here, they perform protection of installations (POI), special duties and protection, and work as field police roles, although Singapore is a small urban country.
I've seen them doing their 2.4KM test and more interesting -navigation tests(they run point to point with timing). I wonder what wartime role they play. -

And during war time, they will be most deadly commando unit that sg could deploy to scare the shxt out of our enemy just by their reputation

I have personally been to Nepal for trekking. An actual kukri(not the one tourist buy) is very useful. The locals told me that the kukri is like a small axe and is curved so that they can cut off a man's head easily. I saw them chop down a tree for firewood with kukris. The Nepalese are amazing fit people and i dare say that most of their elderly is even more physically fit than our youth. I once saw an old man(around 50+) who is bare-footed and is carrying a heavy metal cupboard on his back, walking along the road. Its is fastened to a series of ropes with one on his forehead, which he use to support the weight! When you see from behind it looks like a metal cupboard with legs? Its that big!

Are they really that good? If so, the British should send a few contingents of gurkhas to Iraq and everything would be settled. Right?
