It has narrowed down the contenders from six to three.
The six planes to replace the A4 Skyhawks had included Boeing's F-15T Strike Eagle and F-18 Super Hornet; Lockheed Martin's F-16 Fighting Falcon; the Rafale from France's Dassault Aviation; Russia's Sukhoi; and BAE Systems' Eurofighter Typhoon.
But now only the F-15, Rafale and Typhoon are in the running for what is expected to be a $1.7 billion deal.
Boeing's F-15T is a highly upgraded version of its F-15E.
If selected, it is expected to make it easier for the RSAF to integrate training and logistical support since it is already flying a fleet of F-16s.
But some experts said the F-15s, first flown in the mid 70s by the US airforce, is nearing its development life.
The Eurofighter Typhoon is a collaboration between German, Italian, Spanish and British defence companies.
620 planes are due to be delivered to the partner nations from this year.
As for the Rafale, it is a multi-role aircraft and 10 have been flown on the French aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle, since 2001, with 52 more on the way.
The RSAF is expected to announce the winning contender next year.
