Hope i spelt it right...
To anyone who thinks the Brits were the first to develop special forces....
The Germans beat them in this aspect as well...the brandenbergers were the first units trained and used in special missions to capture key bridgeheads, secure airfields, sow confusion among enemies at major crossroads and many more.
They epitomised the courage and efficiency of most german formations during the war: advanced weapons coupled with astute leadership and professional fighting men. -
Well I think an earlier manifestation of the Brandenburgs would be the storm troopers employed by Ludendorff in the 1918 Michaelmas offence. These are specially trained assault troops organised into assault companies who are meant to exploit gaps in the enemy lines and infiltrate as far as possible into the rear of the enemies. In terms of fighting qualities, personally I think the best German formations inspite of the atrocities commited by them would be the classical Waffen SS divisions IE Hitlerjugend, Das Reich, Totemkopf and Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler -

The 6 man team was never caught even after 2month of sabotage!They were pulled out later.Anyway the Totenkof while tough in combat....was extremely babaric!Heck they were the prison guards!!!!The LAS and Das Reich were far cleaner!Though the cleanest and maybe even the best SS was the Gross deutscheland division! -

Just a minor correction Gross Deustcheland is an army unit instead of a Waffen SS unit. Yep the Totenkopf were the concentration camp guards but hehehe the far cleaner is just relative -

well the Gross Deustcheland was an elite formation in the Werhmacht just as the Panzer Lehr was. Some of the Werhmact elite units were given names just as the Waffen SS units. Nope the Gross Deustcheland members were not chosen from the SS. I agree with you that the 3rd SS was the dirtiest. Their members rotate between concentration camp duties and combat duties. I cannot help but comment on your quote : diplomacy without arms is like music without instruments. Then again arms without instruments is just like instruments playing awful music. Since you were quoting from Frederick II, you should have read about the conflict he had in trying to resolve between Bismarck his chancellor and Von Motlke his chief of staff

An yea Eicke....read he once sent a soldier/guard into a concentration camp for defying him...Oh and about the Frederick II quote ill go read up when i have time.....
