Then this skipper will go down with the ship. In army, where got the CO so willingly go down with the men one? I think that's one major problem in S'pore, actually.... the fact that people tend to look at people in such hierarchical terms. What's wrong with somebody trying to do his job? It's a decent living isn't it? I wish people would just give each other a little more respect, life would be so much better..... too bad some people are just too full of themselves. -

singaporeans haf too narrowly defined success for their own good and for the countries' good.
if tt is the mindset of the majority, we can expect ppl to start flocking away once the economy dwindles or comes to a standstill.

In the first place, there is very little battle group left in this world. Most countries got 1 or 2 ... while US have less than 10.
When a battlegroup is form, the flagship (where the commander is) is usually the carrier (aircraft/helicopter) ...
This ship would usually be flanked by Cruisers, Destroyers, Submarines (anti air, anti sea defence). It is known that the battle group when sailing in the sea can be as far as 100nautical miiles apart.The first contact of a battlegroup is usually the cruisers/destroyers/submarines (usually the subs) while the carrier would be far far away. So the commander would be like way way off the action.
As for army officers especially for those intermediate ranking ones ... they have to chiong on the field wif the man eg OC ... which can be up to the rank of a major. So the danger of a stray bullet hitting them/the arti shells hitting them is highly probable ...
while for a naval officere like the flag commander, if a stray missile is to be aimed for him, they probably have to go thru first the aegis cruiser and then the carrier anti air weapons ... so effectively the probablility of the carrier getting a hit is almost zero. -

perhaps we should remember that not all navies have carriers... but i think that as long as the navy has a decent ship with effective C4I capability, it can perform the role as a flagship already ... e.g. the Aegis can also perform the role if the battle group cdr (admiral?) transfers his flag over there...

dun think the BG can be 100nm apart... that means 185km... first detection contact is likely to be by SATINT or ELINT followed by interception with the carrier's air wings right? why put your ships in harm's way when you can use air power for greater reach?

I do not agree with the criticisms of officers who stay behind away from the frontline. I use to harbour these criticisms myself but i learnt that these are unhealthy criticisms that do no good except to disavow the trust and capabilities of the senior officers.
In any conflict scenario, there must be people with brains who must devise strategies that will outwit the enemies and destroy them with minimum casualties on our side. Likewise, we need competent officers on the frontline who understands such orders and are able to execute these orders by leading his men and risking his own life in the process. We cannot have everyone running up and getting shot and then declare those officers as the competent and brave one. Officers' responsibilities are towards his men and it's his job to make sure that each of them walks out of the battlefield alive.
Just because the people at the back do not risk their lives does not mean that they do not put in effort to ensure that their friends who are fighting do not lose their lives too. Of course not all officers are good but I feel that the best officers are those who understands that on the frontline, all soldiers are men of flesh and blood and should be treated like brothers so that they are not afraid to walk with him into the darkest forests -
