Anxious Malaysian teens jam NS hotlines

KUALA LUMPUR (Malaysia) -- More than 480,000 boys and girls who are eligible to become the pioneer recruits of Malaysia's compulsory national service programme were kept on tenterhooks when the avenues to check on their fate were jammed on Tuesday.
They have been told they could dial a hotline, visit a website or send a mobile phone text message on Tuesday to check if they've been selected randomly by computer but the government phone number was continually busy, the website was inaccessible and their text messages received no replies.
A spokesman for the programme said at least six operators were on duty at the hotline, but there were 'non-stop calls'.
One of the few who got through was Ms Goh Sue Anne, 17, who said she was close to tears because she thought she would be chosen. 'When I found out I wasn't, I was so happy, I was jumping around the house. I called all my friends and told them I wasn't chosen.'
About 85,000 youths born in 1986 are expected to get the call up for three months of physical training that includes military-style exercises, as well as community service and classes on patriotism. The first batch start in February.
Officials hope the plan will help bolster racial integration, curtail religious extremism and instill a sense of civic responsibility in mostly Muslim Malaysia's young people. -- AP

Heh heh heh...those kids up there gonna have 'fun'...they are going through what S'pore first went thru' when NS was first implemented in '67....lol
I wouldn't be surprised if some of them actually go AWOL during this shortened military-style training.... -
It sounds what their NS will be like... something like PES E BMT. One week go BMTC go one circle, come back and go service.
Please, now then they implement NS?

While I agree that we are no more "battle-hardened" than them, its also true that their "NS" in no way compares to ours. Their "NS" is just a pathetic excuse at brainwashing, its not for the purpose of war or anything like that. (got girls, how hard you expect training to be? make them go thru SOC meh? like real......)

the PURPOSE of msian's national service should first be understood before we make comparisons between their system and ours.
in the beginning, they haf made clear tt their ns is not going to be similar to singapore's, and is not interested in cultivating a citizen's army. hence there is not going to be an emphasis on military training, neither reservist duties.
so its no point making comparisons about the ns systems and programmes, and what each prog entails. -
We should compare ourselves with Taiwan or South Korea. Their NS is like ours, ready for war.

What I think is during times of "crisis", these groups who undegone basic weapon handling....will complicate matters for the potential invaders. No easy solution.... cause at a distance, how you tell a long umbrella is not a rifle?.....unless the ROE allows to be more "trigger happy". Cause you got like few seconds to decide. Guess wrong and you bite a piece of metal in your mouth.

Or a human that went through basic training, RTH test, range, SOC and IFC for a period of time?
Which is more similar to a soldier? Which one, when placed on the firing line is more likely to survive?
And while i really dont follow on all the water issues, it seems that M'sia has big bones to pick with us. Need is irrelevant. How many wars have been started because of need? -
Seems that you are confused between the term 'battle-hardened' and 'operational readiness' for lack of a better term. While the SAF has indeed been involved in peacekeeping and/or peace enforcement operations from time to time, together with our training deployments overseas, it hardly qualifies as being 'battle-hardened.' An example of a battle-hardened would be the U.S., Soviet and British military at the end of WWII. break it down even to the company level...look at Band of Brothers...from boot camp to jump school to Normandy and beyond...conscripts just like we were too....the BIG difference is that they have been in a sustained conflict for a period of time. No SAF personnel eversince the Konfrontasi has been involved in a shooting war that could reasonably justify the term 'battle-hardened.' The SAF is simply highly operationally ready, i.e we ARE ready for war, but we have NOT seen conflict.
The water issue is not as relevant in terms of SAF's security calculations. Not with Newater, desalination, etc...We can overcome that vulnerability. What we canot overcome is our energy resource vulnerability. Even if they have 'big bones' to pick with us, their NS program isn't geared towards addressing their military capabilities or lack thereof; its more to prevent ethnic fragmentation in their country. When you perceive something to be a threat, you automatically materialize that threat without taking into consideration other factors involved...can they really afford to go to war with us? Can we really afford to engage in a conflict with M'sia? The point of SAF is simply deterrence....and a highly credible one at that... -

It's a very common thing, i spent 6 months trying to get my new IC (the normal time is less than 3 months), all because my new IC was supposedly "lost in transit". Wonder if it was sold on the black market ....

hehe, battle harden is your army had gone thru war at least twice, have generals who had commanded REAL operations......me think the only battle harden army in asia is indon(then, in 1960s), PRC....
and the only real army that is ready to fight in 2hours is the IDF man, their guy and girl training in no diff................ -
If Singapore is the shape of New Zealand, then I think battle experience not so critical. a human just have to go thru 3 day shooting course to learn to shoot..even one day also can..u wana compare a soldier n a normal human being??
there is not different..the only different is we will be in the front line...if you use your brain carefully n try not to shoot out crap so often..they dun tneed o fight a conventional warfare with us..

It's mainly in the mind. Experiences count. The older generation (ppl like ur mum) are a tougher breed. Life in early Singapore was not so easy. Where as the younger ones today are.....'not quite as tough'.
Using brain in the front line requires a cool mind. That usually means one either has been there OR someone close-by eg platoon sergeant has been there.
SAF don't have that today in the ranks. Some of the officers are so young........ don't know if they have chicken pox or not? Maybe the commandoes but they will be doing something else.
My point of view. I haven't seen action too. Don't know what the insides of a human look like. Never seen blood spilled before too. Haven't been in a situation where ppl all around screaming in pain and bullets, shells flying all around you. -

Let's not use "battlehardened", eh? Rather "well-trained and experienced".
SG has already done NS for decades, and has most of the kinks ironed out. M'Sia is starting now, and will have many stuff to straigthen before they have good community workers, let alone troops.
In a very real sense, NS has created a nation of riflemen in singapore, albeit not to the extent of sweden. If need be, it's theoretically possible to mobilise every TDH and have them as leg infantry in time of war.
And "bullet proof" is a oxymoron. Bullet proof? Vest proof against 9mm, i take 5.56. 5.56, use 7.62. and so on, and so on.
Correct phrase is "bullet resistant".

Take into account overseas work/study/visit, or unable to leave workplace, or just family matters.
In the event of a full-scale recall, the problems to be surmounted, are legion, to say the least.
