From the website....the specification says it can be remote or local.Originally posted by warspite:Does the Typhoon REALLY need to be manned from the outside??? Saw the gunner standing on a pedestal manning the gun in the ST. Looks a bit comical if you ask me. What if the gunner has to traverse the gun???How in the world is he going to aim the gun?
Yes, that's right. Those things can be fired using a joystick and a TV screen for guidance.Originally posted by Blue Dolphin:Aiyo, the poor chap is in the cold, holding the gun for photo taking lah. Notice the bi-shoulder pads are still in their folded position. The gun is fully automated, very capable.
Hi ChineseJunk, do u know why the 25mm gun is called Typhoon? I thought ST designed this 25mm naval remote weapon station albeit based on the Rafael's Typhoon.Originally posted by ChineseJunk:Yes, that's right. Those things can be fired using a joystick and a TV screen for guidance.
The photo op was non tactical but I think it gives readers a sense of scale. The auntie in Tampines and the pak chik in Boon Lay doesn't really know how to go to the Typhoon maker's website for more info.
That lucky gunner got to fire off a few rounds for the TV crew. Some of you might have seen the footage.
I didn't see the video footage but if you examine the picture carefully, you can see some empty cartridges just in front of the gun's pedestral.Originally posted by ChineseJunk:Yes, that's right. Those things can be fired using a joystick and a TV screen for guidance.

Coalition Warship 207 is one hard target. Take my word for it.
There's a limit to how much we can write without compromising opsec. I think it's prudent that we all not compromise the safety of the ship's company.
Even the Typhoon gun... I had to bargain for that one. That's why I could only use "25mm gun" in the first article and some of you thought I actually meant the 76mm A gun.
I somewhat suspect that anyone attempting a Tamil Tiger-style mass suicide boat attack will be in for some rather nasty surprises and will get to meet their god quickly.
All I can say is the ship is ringed with many, many weapons (typical KS Singaporeans) and the ship has more MGs than you have fingers and toes. If you're not careful, you could trip over one while strolling on deck.
While I agree with some (only some, not all) of the sentiments expressed in the thread on Network Centric Warfare (i.e. IKC2) and the concerns in the discussion on Courageous, I think the Navy seems to have staffed and armed 207 properly this time.
Pity, can't tell the full story now. Maybe someday... who knows?
Fairyland: the request for better pix. Am working on it!
Have a great 2004.

Ever heard of license built? Not everything made in Singapore is invented by us you know? Especially so for Isreali equipment.Originally posted by Joe Black:Hi ChineseJunk, do u know why the 25mm gun is called Typhoon? How different is the ST Kinetics version from the Rafael Typhoon? Or is the ST version based entirely on Rafael Typhoon? Why not give it another name?
Export of the LST design and legislation issues on export of US military equipment.
Furthermore, why did RSN not consider putting some CIWS weapons on board the LSTs? A pair of Phalanx Block 1B would do good on the LST both against low skimmers as well as fast speed boats. I still believe that the reaction time from a radar controlled weapon like the Phalanx is far superior than a human controlled platform, both remotely controlled or physical manned ones like the CIS 0.5s.

Beautiful pic! Would be nice to see a big Singapore Flag on it.Originally posted by IAF:
I don't think it is meant to be locally fired. As mentioned by others, this is a posed picture.Originally posted by spencer99:I didn't see the video footage but if you examine the picture carefully, you can see some empty cartridges just in front of the gun's pedestral.
manning the gun manually does look very comical, and how is the gunner going to aim the gun without any gun-sights?
One question....Originally posted by Fairyland:Beautiful pic! Would be nice to see a big Singapore Flag on it.
Sea is choppy. They eat (Buttocks?) too huh?![]()

From what I saw on the news, it's looking somewhat exposed to terrorist attack though. Would have been better if they have a Fearless PV as company......
What's the 25mm gun mentioned in the news article? I can only recall 50 cal MGs and Mistral Simbad launcher.
