Newsflash!!! MAF second ASTROS II MLRS regiment are operational.The first regiment the 51st Arty are based in the Peninsular but the second regiment the 6th Arty are based in Sabah.Got these info from the MMF just now.More MLRS in the pipeline by 2004/2005.

wad does ASTROS stand for again? i think AS is for artillery saturation..then the rest?

REJIMEN Ke-6 Artileri Diraja, yang berpangkalan di Kem Lok Kawi di Kota Kinabalu, yang menyambut ulang tahun ke-10 baru-baru ini, kini dibekalkan roket pelancar berganda (MLRS) yang mampu mencapai 89 kilometer.
Roket pelancar berganda antara senjata termoden di negara ini turut digunakan oleh pasukan tentera darat.
Pasukan itu berperanan memberi bantuan tembakan artileri kepada pasukan sahabat dalam semua fasa peperangan sama ada membabitkan konvensional atau insurgensi.
“Bagi menyahut tanggungjawab itu semua anggotanya sentiasa diletakkan dalam keadaan bersiap sedia daripada semasa ke semasa serta komited terhadap misi rejimen serta dilatih mengendalikan senjata moden berkenaan,” kata Pegawai Pemerintahnya, Kolonel Satwant Singh.
Beliau berkata demikian ketika berucap pada sambutan ulang tahun ke-10 Rejimen Ke-6 Artileri Diraja, baru-baru ini.
Terdahulu, pada majlis berkenaan beliau diberi tabik hormat sebelum melakukan pemeriksaan perbarisan, memakaikan pangkat kepada anggota serta menyampaikan sijil perkhidmatan cemerlang.
Acara perbarisan ulang tahun ke-10 rejimen itu diketuai oleh Penolong Pegawai Memerintah, Mejar Salehudin Ahmad.
Koperal Ngumbang Anak Geru, mendahului senarai pemakaian pangkat sebagai Pemangku Sarjan diikuti Lans Koperal Jerim Mijin dan Lans Koperal Azmi Abdul Gafar.
Satwant berkata, kemudahan senjata yang diberikan kerajaan adalah selaras dengan peranan pasukan itu yang kedua terbesar negara ini dengan penubuhan 17 unit artileri di kem berkenaan.
Sempena sempena ulang tahun ke-10 rejimen itu, beliau mengharapkan agar semua anggota terus komited dan taat setia yang tidak berbelah serta memupuk semangat setia kawan sesama anggota.
“Marilah kita bersama-sama memperbaharui azam dan tekad untuk terus komited terhadap rejimen dengan ketaatan yang tidak berbelah bagi, kerjasama yang erat serta semangat setia kawan yang kental.
“Semua perkara itu perlu dipraktikkan kerana ia amat penting bagi memastikan pasukan kita terus mantap dan mampu memberikan khidmat terbaik kepada rakyat di negeri ini,” katanya.
Ini kerana, pasukan berkenaan dengan penubuhan 17 unit tambahan artileri di Kem Lok Kawi menjadikannya kedua terbesar dalam pasukan tentera darat di seluruh negara.

well... the reason is quite simple...
some countries like malaysia has fighter squadron with only 8 to 12 fighter planes... while others countries like singapore have 18 to 22 fighters per fighter squadron...
in comparison... every RSAF squadron is almost equal to 2 RMAF squadron...
yet if we compare base on squadron... RMAF might have as many squadron as RSAF... but then... it did not mean RMAF has as many fighters as RSAF.
so... MAF forms a new A-2 unit... but we are more interested in the delivery of new A-2 Platforms...
otherwise... MAF could simply create 2 A-2 BN by splitting the number of A-2 platform in half... but then... the total number of platform would still be the same...
so..... its not a big deal if MAF have 1, 2 or even 3 or more new A-2 BN if the number of A-2 platform didnt increase in tandem.
of course... malaysia always claim they are getting new stuffs or more stuffs... but... i would rather wait for those new or more stuffs to arrive first...

take the fact that they havent recieve any new A-2 platform... plus the fact that their present number of A-2 platform is gonna be deployed in 2 BN rather then 1 BN...
simple logic clearly points that they have to split their number of A-2 platform between the 2 BN... unless the other BN is using plastic toy mockup platform... then i cant say lah...
but in the end... its simply means that they intend to split their A-2 platform in 2 and send half of it across the south china sea to east malaysia to threaten the orang utans there...

Dudes, the moment the ASTROS launches they are as good as dead, attracting just about every JDAM, long shot and stand off smart munition SAF can throw at it. How many anti air defences Malaysia Armed Forces can concentrate? I dunno, but I seriously doubt it can shoot down everything being thrown at their ASTROS. Shoot and scoot? Sure they can, but I'll like to see them outrun smart munitions.
Yes, spending millions on what is basically a one shot system is certainly smart. Maybe there's a reason why they are generally employed only when you have overwhelming superiority. -

Please .. just becos' this is a military forum doesn't mean there's no place for graciousness. Harimau is just a much a military nut as all of us. We all share the same interest - so let's be gentlemanly towards each other, even if one of us is from singapore's northern neighbor. If the truth be known, i'm sure we find that his postings do lend variety to the topics discussed.

Happy New Year!! I do not know malay but I suspect is says the MLRS has a range of 89 km.
