Beret colors depends on your vocation, unit and training.
If you are engineer trained (dark blue beret), then posted to become pionner in Infantry unit, you become green beret. This is because pioneers are organic to an Infantry battalion. Same goes for other support arms trained personnels. Like signallers (dark blue beret) who got posted to Gds unit, they must go through Gds conversion to become Khaki beret because they are organic to Gds battalion.
Cdo who went through demo course during vocation training are still red beret because it is part of cdo training. So I think if a clerk who got posted to Cdo but without going through cdo course, will not be a red beret. maybe a dark blue to signify admin personnel. otherwise, not fair to cdo who earned the red beret rite........ -
The red beret was only for the combat side guys in CDO. IIRC, the drivers and signal stores guys wore blue - I can't remember what the clerks wore. Our demolitions guys went through a modified and shortened version of the Infantry Pioneer course, but they wear red berets bcause they are Commandos who just happen to be qualified in Pioneer work.

Signallers in guards unit, still wear blue, except with a guards "tab" behind. Even if they undergo guards conversion, they won't change beret color....Only a extra tag on their shoulder. Hmm....as I said...was years ago..guess it might have changed. Been donkey years since I ORD anyway. Actually - Commandos and Guards berets are awarded to personel whom have successfully completed the respective courses.
Hence, if a signaller (or other vocations) have completed the Guards conversion course successfully - he will have the Guards tab, and the Guards beret awarded for use.
Members of the 7th SIB have an additional 7SIB cap badge backing on their berets - regardless of the colour of the beret (vocation).
For the Commando and Guards beret/tab - as long as you remain qualified - the beret follows you - as it is an award, like any other qualification badges.
I still have my original green Guards beret with the 7 SIB backing (used up to the mid 90s') and the current khaki beret without the 7 SIB backing, as I'm longer with 7 SIB.Originally posted by wombat:Signallers in guards unit, still wear blue, except with a guards "tab" behind. yah. i oso think its more the cse and hence the recognition tt a person gets to wear say the khaki or maroon, not by merely the fact tt he got posted there for his tour. he mus, in a sense, be converted, b4 he is qualified to wear them. tt way they can also ensure quality of these so called creme dela creme.
