You got that right.Originally posted by sgFish:can someone explain to me how a missile is wire guided? does a wire trail behind it like some torpedoes?
yes.Originally posted by vleelee:hmm, this is a good question. can i go on to ask:
- does this mean that the firer cannot fire and forget and must keep the cross hair on the target all the way?
- what is so good about these kind of weapons?
- what is the maximum calibre of such weapons?
- is the range determined by the length of the wire? (wow ... the milan as the much length of wire?)
- must it be ground based or can it be launched from an airiel platform?

Yup, real time targeting at its best. Just keep the crosshair on the moving target and the projectile will do exactly the same.
- what is so good about these kind of weapons?
As mentioned above. They're guided.
- what is the maximum calibre of such weapons?
Well, so far they work pretty well with self-propelled projectiles. But there should be a limit. Imagine ICBMs that are guided by wire, woah.
- is the range determined by the length of the wire? (wow ... the milan as the much length of wire?)
Hell, lots of wire, 4km worth of wire is alot dammit.
- must it be ground based or can it be launched from an airiel platform?
I think launching from a moving aerial platform is kinda tricky coz of the displacement of the moving platform. So far most projectiles launched from aerial platforms are guided by lased or F&F.
By the time enemy track down, wire is cut, and missile man scooted liao, coz the wire i saw on most pics are super thin and transparent.Picture this wire thin transparent line lying on jungle floor....Originally posted by Groovee:den isnt firing a wire guided missile v dangerous? as in, if u dun hit e objective you are gonna get tracked down real easily with e wire?
and such a system would require the target to be in direct line of sight?![]()

so targets of TOW missiles have to be in the line of sight of the firer isit? and in poor weather conditions will the performance of the tracking system decline?Originally posted by dkhoo:In the TOW1, the firing unit has a computer which looks for two things: the hot glow from the rocket engine of the missile and the location of the crosshair. It compares the two points and issues corrections to the missile accordingly. For example, if it sees that the glow from the rocket is to the left of the crosshair, it commands the missile to fly to the right. This is "optical tracking". The TOW1 was easily defeated by flares (which look like the glow from the rocket engine, confusing the firing unit), so the TOW2 instead looks for a strobe light on the missile that flashes according to a certain code.
The wire is very very thin and does not weigh much per km. Most of the time, the firer will be found by the launch signature of the missile rather than the wire. Being tracked by the wire is the least of his worries.
as far as aiming is concerned i guess so.Originally posted by sgFish:so targets of TOW missiles have to be in the line of sight of the firer isit? and in poor weather conditions will the performance of the tracking system decline?
Javelin sounds fun too.Originally posted by wuming78:spike.

[b]Javelin is fire n forget.
In any case, its not that hard to fire a Milan and TOW. Just keep crosshair on target can le.
But problem is, during the time of missle flight, the crew of the Milan is vulnerable to fire. Whether camouflaged or not, after a missle is launched... a lot of people will start looking at u... like it or not. It then becomes a quick draw situation. If the target or other enemy units is able to return fire and kill the missile crew b4 the missile hits, then the milan or the tow will lose guidance and miss. Considering the crew of the milan would be more or less stationary... chances are high that they would be taken out before they kill their target.
However, when cleverly used in an ambush situation. The Milan network can actually become a deadly trap. Because they do not use an active system to track the target, the only detection the enemy will have is the sight of the missiles actually in flight. How many crews can u kill before u lose ur platoon/company?[b]
The range of Milan is 1950m and it takes about 12.5 sec to reach this range( not very fast).Originally posted by sgFish:what is the range of the milan and how long does it take for the missile to hit its target?
