er I think mebbe in cold war situation we will build a buffer, but in current times any invasion I think most likly will come from further further further up north yah the nation with 400,000 strong regular army that always quarrel with thailand. Assuming one day they have a quarrel with thailand with a border skirmishes blowing out of porpotion and starts to annex southern thailand, will malaysia attempt to create a buffer in the north to protect it's borders?
And assuming that they do the malaysians will have more on their plate than their regulars can handle I believe they will invite singapore into johore to jointly protect 'each other'.

dig a deep moat filled with piranas....
