I think some kind of combat assualt course where there are GPMG live round fire way above your head where you Leopard crawl all the way thru the course. Pretty safe I believe where there is practically no chance of being hit .
There is also other live firing where the soldiers this time will fire live round during the exe in section, platoon and even up to coy level.
There is also the Battalion Defence live firing in one southern island, quite a spectacle for nite firing where you will see all kind tracer rounds from M-16 to GPMG, 84 & even 106. And you will also see the little parachute from the M203 illum round.
Those who have gone thru this will know the "firework display".

just my opinion.. some of u might no agree though..
using of live rounds during training does not mean we have to shoot at each other or to be shoot at, so that we learn to take over.

in my view, live firing is to build confident and responsibility of a soldier when coming to handle live rounds.
as soldiers, we have to be confident in handling live rounds, and this is achieved through realistic training in live firing.
but of course safety is the most important. no one wants to be injured or even kill during training.
and its individual soldier's responsibility on the safety of himself and his buddies around him.
taking cover is one of the teaching of getting safety, especially when you are doing flanking with live rounds, n you'll automatically take cover when ur doing it.
as for the bmt cse with mg firing on top, u won't get hit even if u stand up and do jumping jets.. -
Exactly, lion - live firing is more for the benefit of the firer's confidence than anything else.
Gary, like the other guys have already noted, the BIC is not a valid example because of how high the mg is fired.
Personally, the thing that drove the message home best was the firing range demonstration of what 7.62 rounds could do to steel cupboards, logs and concrete blocks. IIRC, the concrete block lasted a total of about 15 seconds. The lesson driven home at the time by my platoon sergeant was not only that you need to take cover, but that the cover would not offer protection for very long, so you needed to stay on the move. Having seen what was left of the objects that were fired upon, I was quite happy to take the cover lessons seriously - I didn't need to be fired upon to know how to take cover. -

the objective of that WASN'T to teach us to stay undercover. it was meant to help us become more familar with battle conditions. what mr smartass here suggests, is like, put a soldier near a trench, throw a live grenade, and then watch him scramble for dear life n jump into the trench. THAT, is what that brainless clod is suggesting. Your examples of live-ammo ex? doesn't quite touches that point man. -
