Afterall, turboprop a/c such as the PC-7, Texan, Harvards have good handling characteristics and thrust compared to some jet trainers. My point though is that if there's a need to replace the S211 for basic training, as well as the A4 for lead-in fighter training, wouldn't it make more sense to get a jet trainer that can fulfill both roles at the same time?
Of course there's always the option of just replacing the S211 with a more cost effective turboprop a/c, and then continue using A4s or F5s for AJT, or even leasing jets from BAe or Aermachi to supplement AJT. It'll be interesting to see how RSAF will decide.
for beginners, its best to used an a/c that is forgiving to students mistakes, most of the advance jets don't. rsaf gave up the idea of s.211 being used for advance jet training becos it cannot do what a fighter can do.
