Malaysia's National Service trainees on riot
KUALA LUMPUR -- Hundreds of trainees of Malaysia's first national service call-up took part in a weekend of riots after four of their colleagues were beaten up by camp officials, state media reported on Monday.
Police quoted by the Bernama news agency said the violence erupted late on Sunday in Sarawak, east Malaysia, after a heated row between three medical staff of the national service programme and two trainees.
Mr Stanley Jonathan Ringgit, the Bintulu deputy police chief, said the situation worsened when two other trainees, who rushed to the aid of their friends, were also beaten up by the three staff believed to be drunk.
He said four trainees received outpatient medical treatment.
During the incident, the trainees threw stones, damaged chairs and smashed up the windscreen of a car, Bernama reported. Police were called in to bolster security and restore order to the camp, which houses some 600 trainees.
More than 28,000 youths began the national service training on Feb 16.
The government says the objective of the RM500-million (US$132 million) pilot programme is to build a generation of self-confident, patriotic youths with noble values and develop multiracial harmony and unity.
The programme does not involve weapons handling but physical training includes unarmed military-style exercises such as basic self-defence and jungle survival skills. -- AFP

POLICE CONFIRM ATTACK AT NATIONAL SERVICE CAMP
BINTULU, March 14 (Bernama) -- Four trainees from the National
Service Programme camp in Similanjau today received outpatient
treatment at Bintulu Hospital after they were allegedly beaten up
by three medical staff from their camp.
Bintulu OCPD ASP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit, when contacted by
Bernama, confirmed the 5pm incident which was believed to be
triggered by a heated argument between three medical staff of the
National Service programme and two trainees.
He said the situation worsened when two other trainees, who
rushed to the aid of their friends, were also bashed up by the
three staff said to be drunk.
Following the commotion, several hundred trainees and trainers
rushed to the scene to help restore the situation, he said.
However, they failed to do so and the police had to be called
in to restore order. At about 6pm, a team from the Bintulu police
arrived at the camp, which is located about 45km from Bintulu
town.
The police have also stationed their men at the camp in order
to maintain peace and order.

Not so surprising that the Malaysian National Service had a riot on their hands.
In the early days of National Service in Singapore, we had our own fair share of 'sit down strike' - or 'mutiny' in military terms.
Whole Company had to surrender their rifle and loaded up the old Bedford 3-tonner, with the Company Commander and the Battalion Commander overseeing the operation.
The Battalion Commander had a hard time then, and the Company Commander's promotion will be on ice for the next few years.
While the Battalion Commander tried to cool things further by releasing the 100 plus soldiers after a 1 hour fake ride to Military Police Detention Centre, and the incident is neatly covered up without any information ever reaching MINDEF.
It was not uncommon to have entire platoon refusing to accept the stupid orders of midnight drills and change parade from NCOs who were out to torment the Privates.
Even Recruits were known to have refused to accept orders that were totally silly, and done at the whim of NCOs in the middle of the night, over a few weeks.
There has to be a breaking point.
Intelligent and reasonable men, put under pressure by unreasonable men, will know how best to reasonably deal with these unreasonable men giving unreasonable orders.
There were no counsellors to turn to during the early days of National Service, most soldiers take matters into their own hands.
Good Commanders will have to perform 'fire fighting' work to bring the situation under control, without the morale being affected. -

last time got fever then put to sickbay, so i volunteer drink water than to b put on drip... -

my sense is tt since their ns was not meant to be military, but they roped in the military ppl to conduct lessons and trg, the military ppl r prob confused as to the kind of discipline to impose and expect of the kids - it canot be too harsh, mil style, but there shud be a some form of discipline. but the military ppl r generally not familiar wif such half half approach. so the discipline part buckled.

sigh......why din they just rope in full scale military training this i will never undertand man.....but just a question, if they wan unity, why din they just call down those chaps from OBS sabah?

and they can call it watever they like but in the end, its compulsory for those who got called up. so its a form of ns. -
well, ok........but still a little strange lah.........just glad that at the very least the NS i am gonna serve at least serve much more purpose( and they PAY mE!)

hai.........best thing is OBS style also can riot, either malaysian trainers not trained enuf to handle kids, or the malaysian kids something wrong.........because for all i know OBS never had a riot before.......
