How to be selected to be a SOF??![]()

Originally posted by force83:SOF does not recruit civilians directly. You will have to be serving in the SAF for a year at least (if I remembered), PES A with perfect eyesight. Usually - they will come around with a list of names - to invite individuals to try out for selection. People from different units can try the selection - but most will come from combat units. (Commandos, Guards, etc)

In the 80s, the SOF is still a classified unit, btw, it sound that NSF need to sign on if they wanted to be in the SOF since they will be a CSM or OC.Originally posted by Gedanken:Just a few things, Gary. I don't think you have to be a regular when you sign up for selection - the guys from CDO I knew who went for selection were NSF when they did it. Also, once you're posted to SOF, you stay there except when you're rotated through your tours of duty, typically in 1 CDO (e.g. a CSM tour if you're a specialist, or an OC tour if you're an officer).

a group of them from my unit went for the selection. within that group there were a few nsf.Originally posted by gary1910:In the 80s, the SOF is still a classified unit, btw, it sound that NSF need to sign on if they wanted to be in the SOF since they will be a CSM or OC.
So the cdo NSF signed on after selection or after they became SOF then?
How abt now since they no more a classified unit, could a NSF become a SOF w/o signing on?

I can't say I remember that particular insignia, but it is different from the badge that I've seen worn the uniform.Originally posted by subudei:Yup, the insignia is correct.
I've seen some SOF candidates going through tekan 'training', as they sometimes train using the common facilities and training areas in Hendon Camp. Naturally, their tekan-ing is even more vicious than standard Commando tekan-ing. But it seems that the Ranger course is even tougher than SOF training. So, use your imagination, boysRespect the guys with the red tabs.
n other way round too..Originally posted by Gedanken:That is correct - SOF men have been known to fail Ranger.
eh bro..english no gd..wat do u mean by tat???Originally posted by Gedanken:I can't say I remember that particular insignia, but it is different from the badge that I've seen worn the uniform.
Agreed re: Ranger. It's not unknown for SOF men to fail Ranger - the difference seems to lie mainly in the duration of the tekaning. Over on the battalion side, we used to speculate on the differences between Hell Week and the two 30-day stretches in the Ranger course. Then again, back in my day, the pass rate for Ranger used to be about 30% - most of our instructors came back to the company sans tab and hair. Some of my former mates are now Ranger cadres, and while they're still friendly enough over beers, I wouldn't recommend meeting them in a dark alley.
