SHARPESHOOTERS: The Royal Navy and Royal Marines team enjoying their success
Three keen marksmen from RNAS Culdrose were selected as members of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Combat Shooting Team which took part in the International Skill at Arms meeting in Brisbane, Australia.
Commander Ian Danbury, executive officer at Culdrose, Chief Petty Officer Dave Shilson, of 771 squadron, and Air Engineering Mechanic Jim Stead, from 849 squadron, were chosen for the team as the top marksmen with the SA80 A2 service rifle from across the naval service.
Led by Commander Danbury and Lieutenant Colonel Colin Beadon from the Royal Marines, the team trained for a week in the UK before travelling to Australia for the military event, known as Exercise Waltzing Matilda, in which teams from a number of countries pitted their marksmanship skills in combat shooting.
Out of the 12 teams competing, the Royal Navy and Royal Marines came a very creditable fourth, behind the Malaysian Army in first place, the Australian Army second and the British Army third.
