A minority might like NS based on their personal experience or situation. Guys who have gone through OCS may feel that NS has improved their leadership qualities etc...
But to the majority of average male youths,NS is a costly waste of time mann. Its killing the motivation of the young male population in singapore... no one seems to truly care about the defence of singapore... all just wanna do the basic necessary to serve and F off! Everyday bumping around, doing Sai kang and pretending to be patriotic (wayang) when the high ranking clowns are walking around... Why do we continue to bluff ourselves & uphold this NS?

Damn the SAF & Goverment for putting us into this position!!

Well, I'm pretty confident of my men, my company and the battalion to fight against the enemy. Without the training in Thailand, Burnei and Taiwan, it would'nt have prepared them for a real fight.
Being both an Inf cmdr and assigned to numerous SO missions, I usually see cockups when men are lazy to learn how to do proper fire movement or not looking who is in front before throwing a hand grenade (Thunderflash) into the trench which ended up in the man's SBO, not learning how to prone properly and bangs his teeth against the M16, during Live Firing or L/F not pointing the gun striaght to the target and endangering people's lives... tons of other stupid incidents which could have turned out to be a dangerous one.
Its up to you to defend your country. Eventually, you might have kids and a family or a gay/lesbian partner or noone but you still have your parents/siblings or relatives still in Singapore to look after. -

I donÂ’t speak based on my perception. I observe and wiitness the many discrepancies within the SAF including numerous feedback from many NSF men i interact with. Some have it good, others have it really bad and are complaining like crap. My overall experience serving NS is without doubt a waste of time. This is especially true for those with medical conditions and are very much "out of place"
I've did my part to fulfill my obligation in NS, abide by the rules and do the necessary. Winning the hearts and minds of the soldiers is the most important thing in peace time and we just donÂ’t see it....
The problem lies in the SAF's system of conducting national service and the duration.
I have witness 2 cases of suicide and 8 cases of soldiers reporting with depression among many others within the few 2mths. The level of Motivation in the SAF is appalling. Malingering, AWOL seems to have topped the list among many others.
You guys may have yours views and i respect that. If you were put into our situation, maybe your opinion would be different. -

But disputes are usually counter balance by military might otherwise you will be bullied even today.
For example, the Spratly Islands issue, where PRC actually sent forces to occupy some of them even with the disgust of the Fillipinos, since they have no mean to stop the Chinese!
Another example with Brunei offshore oilfield where they send a French survey team which was chased off the by Malaysian gunboats, till now the issue is still not resolved becos the Brunei's is too weak to go against the Malaysian.
As for Sg example, w/o the strong SAF, the Malaysian could easily cut off our water supply so to force us to bend to their wishes whenever there is dispute between two countries. LKY has warned MY that unilateral cutting off our water means war!!!!
They have threaten but they never dare to do so.
Another example is the Pedra Branca issue, which after the Couragous incident, the Malaysian kept on intruded into the water of Pedra Branca and proclaimimg joint patrol. With warning from Dr. Tan , the intrusion ceased.
If RSN is as weak as Brunei's navy , I dun think it will stop.
Our stability which are greatly due to our military power mean a good location for FDI, otherwise how could we continue to enjoy economical growth for so long!!!
Therefore dun say that that NS is a total waste of time becos NS ensure our safety , stability and finally financially as well.
For ppl who dislike NS are those who dislike the discipline imposed on them which is universal in any uniform group . Without it, nothing will be achieved, otherwise how could you motivate a large group of unruly ppl to continue fight on for more than 48hrs!!!!
Therefore dun say NS is a waste of time, you dislike it becos you dun like to be shout at or told what to do all the time, you dun like the restrictive disciplined organisation like the SAF, period.
For those who think that way most probably will "keng" and mark by all his superior as well as peers, which mean a very miserable life during NS , but with a postive attitude toward NS, you might even enjoy it.
