Int'l relation are based on power either militarily or economically !!!
But disputes are usually counter balance by military might otherwise you will be bullied even today.
For example, the Spratly Islands issue, where PRC actually sent forces to occupy some of them even with the disgust of the Fillipinos, since they have no mean to stop the Chinese!
Another example with Brunei offshore oilfield where they send a French survey team which was chased off the by Malaysian gunboats, till now the issue is still not resolved becos the Brunei's is too weak to go against the Malaysian.
As for Sg example, w/o the strong SAF, the Malaysian could easily cut off our water supply so to force us to bend to their wishes whenever there is dispute between two countries. LKY has warned MY that unilateral cutting off our water means war!!!!
They have threaten but they never dare to do so.
Another example is the Pedra Branca issue, which after the Couragous incident, the Malaysian kept on intruded into the water of Pedra Branca and proclaimimg joint patrol. With warning from Dr. Tan , the intrusion ceased.
If RSN is as weak as Brunei's navy , I dun think it will stop.
Our stability which are greatly due to our military power mean a good location for FDI, otherwise how could we continue to enjoy economical growth for so long!!!
Therefore dun say that that NS is a total waste of time becos NS ensure our safety , stability and finally financially as well.
For ppl who dislike NS are those who dislike the discipline imposed on them which is universal in any uniform group . Without it, nothing will be achieved, otherwise how could you motivate a large group of unruly ppl to continue fight on for more than 48hrs!!!!
Therefore dun say NS is a waste of time, you dislike it becos you dun like to be shout at or told what to do all the time, you dun like the restrictive disciplined organisation like the SAF, period.
For those who think that way most probably will "keng" and mark by all his superior as well as peers, which mean a very miserable life during NS , but with a postive attitude toward NS, you might even enjoy it.
you sound so "fugue"...Originally posted by Ayukat:Yah! More supporters!

for those who think singapore would never be in a war or will never win a war? think again, yes, singapore might be at less-odds when fighting a war........but for me, i rather die a soldier(or a fighting man) then live as a %^&&^ person under occupation.....
*Yawns again* So those posts that flamed me had substance?Originally posted by kopiosatu:sigh...
see what i mean. comments like these just bring the discussion down to a childish level.
there's nothing to 'yay' about if you have people who think the same way as you.
everyone has an opinion. just that he has the same as yours, and there are people who support ns which are against what your believe in.
if you don't want people to flame you, please contribute posts with more substance.
I know i crap alot, but if you want people to listen to you, please do what i said above.

Very well, if you want to get into cliches, I shall respond in kind: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants".
Yes, but freedom comes with a price.Originally posted by Ayukat:Freedom is the right of all sentinent beings.
Excellent, M! There was no interruption at all. The reference to "The Rock" was wholly intentional for its hackneyed nature, which suits this thread at this stage!Originally posted by M:Jefferson =]
So quoted General Hummel to Captain Mason, who retorted with, "Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious" by Wilde.
Just a flashback, pardon the interruption.![]()

2 1/2 years is too long. How about 3 months? And how come smart people get to serve longer?Originally posted by lion02:freedom will not be there, if no one wants to sacifice n only think of himself...
our freedom n good life today is due to the sacifice of our forefathers, who fought for what we have today.
to ensure that our children will have their freedom n continue to enjoy what we have achived today n their hope for tomorrow, does it really matter to just sacifice a few years of ns....
nothing is free in this world... n freedom will not be there if u don't fight for it.
r u confident to fight in a war with 3 mths of training?Originally posted by Ayukat:2 1/2 years is too long. How about 3 months? And how come smart people get to serve longer?
he wouldn't know. he'll reply with some theory of his which sounds totally absurd.Originally posted by wuming78:r u confident to fight in a war with 3 mths of training?
do u think ur peers and commanders will be confident with u, if u had 3 mths of training?
You need at least one year of training to be at least operational ready, at least for combat troops.Originally posted by Ayukat:2 1/2 years is too long. How about 3 months? And how come smart people get to serve longer?

no need to be sad.Originally posted by ^sylvia^:my bf is serving ns now.. he always come home with a tired look and begin to sleep till the day he booking in..too exhausted in training
No problem, if that day comes I'll just run away.Originally posted by wuming78:r u confident to fight in a war with 3 mths of training?
