And what do you think the idea behind NS is, Einstein?Originally posted by Ayukat:I'll fight but for my own freedom not the country's.
hm... i dun understand y ppl always equate country to the government. the government is jus one small part of a country.Originally posted by Shotgun:Fight for my country? LOL. I'll fight for my friends n family. Not for the government. Who are they to me? They make so many "nice" policies that companies end up favoring the hiring of "foreign" talents, go ask those foreign talents to die for them lar.
As far as I am concerned, if it ever comes to war, I see no reason to protect our government unless they start refocusing on favoring Singaporeans more than some ingrate mainland chinese students.
I'll fight but for my own freedom not the country'sLet's see now. what would be your chances of survival if you didn't have training from NS?
Now I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. You won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.General Patton's most famous speech in full is here :
You may be thankful that twenty years from now when you are sitting by the fireplace with your grandson on your knee and he asks you what you did in the great World War II, you WON'T have to cough, shift him to the other knee and say, 'Well, your Granddaddy shoveled sh!t in Louisiana.'Another one, to illustrate the shouting phenomena in the SAF,
When I want my men to remember something important, to really make it stick, I give it to them double dirty. It may not sound nice to some bunch of little old ladies at an afternoon tea party, but it helps my soldiers to remember. You can't run an army without profanity; and it has to be eloquent profanity. An army without profanity couldn't fight it's way out of a piss-soaked paper bagYou've never been in ANY army if you've never taken a scolding with profanities in it.
If war breaks out, I think i'll fight to cover my buddy's ass and hope he covers mine!Originally posted by Ayukat:I'll fight but for my own freedom not the country's.

I refused to read the rest of the thread after i saw the first post last week thinking that it was bs.
I made a mistake. I read the entire thread due to curiousity (wtf is this so long?), and found out it was total bs (most of the childish whines).
Let's see now. what would be your chances of survival if you didn't have training from NS?
Secondly what are you going to fight with? Your mom's cooking knives? Or your invincible digimon? SAF isn't going to give out guns and ammo to ingrates like you. Maybe get them off dead soldiers? Being the coward (you admitted as much), you probably won't get close enough to frontlines to even see as much as an enemy.
Or you can fight with fellow soldiers who have trained with you in the past. They may be the most cock-up bunch of idiots you know, but at least you are sure they are half-trained at the very least. And these cockanadens are supplied with weapons and ammon from the SAF.
I'll take my chances with the latter.
I'll digress a little here on why kids today can't seem to grow up ...
There's some weird generation gap between the young adults (i'll call them Gen-Y) and teenagers (i'll call them GB, for Gen-Brat) in Singapore today. Me, I belong to in between these 2 generations, and I've seen some rather disturbing things.
GB kids nowadays have handphones in primary school, maids to carry their school bags and all that assorted rubbish. Hence, they grow up thinking the world revolves around themselves. Perhaps subconciously, they expect things to go their way forever. Their whims and fancies are all granted by over-protective parents who want to give their GB child the best; not knowing that this over-indulgence would likely ruin them.
Today, a teacher rapping a student on the palm with a metal ruler would instantly cause a PR nightmare. Panaroid parents would immediately call up the school authorities to complain (My sis teaches in a primary school today, so i know). And if the parents kbkp enough, our dear TNP would chap ji kar and make it headline news the next day.
In the past, if I ever told my mom that, she'd just say "Why never beat harder?" *Note : Of course, if I told her my teacher took a broomstick and hit my head till it bled, she'd react differently.* And neither did I get the newest handphones and pagers from my parents. My first handphone was bought with my own money from my first paycheck. Everything new that I wanted but didn't need, was paid for by my own savings. I was taught the value of things.
These GBs live in a safe, overprotected world of their own and simply refuse to listen. While their parents should shoulder some blame, the majority of it should be given to the GBs themselves. Because in the end, only they can wake themselves up. If they refuse to, let them learn the hardest way possible from the harshest teacher : Life.
It's inevitable that these kids will enter the forum and lower the average maturity/intelligence level, so why argue with them? They won't listen anyway, so let them learn the hard way on their own. If they eventually enter NS with a negative mindset, they would come out worse. This would affect their lives in a negative way in the future. Let them screw up their lives on their own.
Back to the point somewhat ...
I was actually raring to go to NS after JC because I was so damn bored with my life and temp job. After I entered NS, the only thing I wanted to do was get out. Now looking back, those days weren't so bad afterall. It's funny how life works out sometimes.
dude. when they issue weapon, the also assign you to SOMEWHERE. then you desert, the officer will get to use his spanky p226.Originally posted by Ayukat:One more thing, how do you know SAF isn't going to issue weapons to me? They won't even know its me.
The main point is even if the intension is good, meaningful and important to the country, is it truely right to force someone against their own will? I think I said this many times already.

I stand by his opinions on the whole issue of NS. Awarness on how NS is being conducted and the level of motivation among those serving is important.
I didn't chose that CCA, it was the best solution for getting high CCA points in the shortest time. I didn't had a CCA then and my previous CCA teacher brought me to the Dance teacher because it was the most tedious CCA. She wanted to suffer in misery but she lost. I was happier in there.Originally posted by Blockhead:Wow, i can't believe this has carried on for so long!
Look, it is clear u do not like NS. That's fine, really. But the fact remains that u still have to do it, unless u have a 'get out of singapore free' card, and can 'escape' to some other country and don't come back.
The fact of the matter is, what u get out of it depends on what u put into it. If u expect to totally detest it and consider it a waste of time, your next few years will be hell, and frankly speaking, u will perform badly thru out your service, and u will feel like crap for the whole period.
You will not get any sympathy from your compatriots, and especially from the pple here who have had to go thru it with your belly-aching. Everyone has had to do it. u seem to think that NS is a burden. U are right, it is. But it is one every guy here has to bear. It is also a responsibility, like it or not. the act of the matter is, we don't have the capability to defend ourselves otherwise. if u don't like the reality of the situation, leave. i am not kidding.
As for ur dance experience, good for u that u achieved in something that u CHOSE to do. I think u deserve even more credit when u excel in something that u HAVE to do.
Its all about attitude, kiddo. Stop complaining and get with the program.
from you post, i reckoned that you still lack experience in life.... yes nobody likes to be railed at..... but next time when you step into the society, if your boos rails at you and starts to bang table, do you just walk out and quit? you might other financial considerations to take into account...... my former OC used to bang tables, kick the rubbish bin, throw hole puncher at me.... what am i suppose to do? draw out my weapon to shoot him? no i did not, instead i thanked him from my bottom of my heart, i keep asking myself how can i avoid a 'good one' from him, instead of complaining, i decide to be proactive and anticipate things...this is the best weapon to keep his mouth and legs quiet......Originally posted by Ayukat:I didn't chose that CCA, it was the best solution for getting high CCA points in the shortest time. Why do people HAVE to do National Service? Are you absolutely sure there will be no deserters? Not directing this to you but to everybody, are you absolutely sure YOU will not be the deserter? Somebody once said you won't know it until you are in the situation yourself. And I seen many people claimed how brave they were around these places.
so wat is he gona do when anyone of us insult him? well..he can retaliate..but in real life..u think he is able to?Originally posted by Flashgalaxy:Arukat posts/opinions are honest and constructive.
