Watched a Discovery Channel documentary recently on life aboard a Russian Typhoon class boomer. It's freakin' huge and there was even a small pool inside for the men to swim in. The weirdest part was when the captain got back home, he was living in a rundown flat (looked like an old HDB 3-room) which was utterly unkempt; basically ghetto living.
My mind twirls at the dissonance of a ghetto-living captain who can launch some major megatons from beneath the ocean surface. -
Wah lau ... captain lives a ghetto life huh ? . Wonder what kind of life his men lives in . Maybe the government haven't pay his salary for years
... who knows ... the russian government is crippling right now and unable to run a mammoth navy . I was just thinking , why isn't the singapore government buying some of the russian attack submarines (not training ones) . sure it will come cheap . anybody know if there is indeed a "rule'' that singapore won't buy russian hardwares such as tanks and ships ? -

Well actually if we were to buy the russian subs alot of people will make noise.....not because of the subs but because of the reactor!which we cld use as a power plant but u get the picture....

or the new akula class... haa..
i still dun understand why rsn is still not goin to replace its torpedoes.. whitehead torpedoes are gettin obsolete..

I do not think the maritime enviroment of the Malacca Straits and the South China Sea will favour their deployment. The Kilos and Akulas are pretty big and for the Akulas, why do we need titanium hull and a 5000ft diving capability and nuclear propulsion. Rather a small submarine with modern AIP system would be more appropriate IE the Israeli Dolphins and the Swedish Gotland. Regarding the torpedoes, I think the Whiteheads are still appropriae for the threat level in the region.
