I had a chance to visit the Nimitz when she was on her way home from the Gulf last year, we had a little 2 hour tour conducted by no less than the Air Boss himself, will try to see if I can still find the pictures. Words fail me if I were to try to describe the experience, kinda like all your wet dreams come true at the same time LOL.

Agree that a visit to a carrier is a great experience, but I'm personally angling for a visit to a Wasp or Tarawa class LHD/LHA next. Need a change of pace after 4 carriers! -

the rectangular shaped thingy visible on the superstructure is part of the phased array that makes up the Aegis system IIRC. Anyone can confirm -
I second that. It is one of the 4 SPY phase array on the ship. The Aegis phased array radar system is to deal with saturated missile attacks which was Soviet naval doctrine. Given their relative inaccuracy, it was hoped that a ship's defences would be swamped by missiles coming from all sides. The Aegis system works in conjunction with the vertical launcher system to provide for a more rapid response to incoming missiles.
