Top Austrian arms producer, Steyr Mannlicher, will shift production of its Steyr assault rifles and pistols to Malaysia, Defence Minister Najib Razak said Monday.
"Steyr Mannlicher will transfer fully the license to manufacture and export Steyr rifles and pistols in the global market to Malaysia," Najib said after opening a four-day international defence exhibition here.
Major international arms manufacturers from the United States, Britain, South Africa and France are showcasing their state-of-the-art equipment, from battle tanks to infantry gear.
Najib said the Steyr assault rifles and pistols could be promoted in the Middle East and Africa as the weapons were technically superior compared to other makers found in the region.
"Considering the size of the market, it could be potential revenue earner for the country," he said.
Najib announced that local defence firm National Aerospace Defence Industries (NADI) had concluded the deal with Steyr Mannlicher to manufacture Steyr rifles and pistols.
The joint venture firm, incorporated in March, would be known as Steyr Mannlicher (M) Sdn Bhd.
"With this development, Malaysia is now one of the leading manufacturers of military rifles and pistols in the world," he said as he launched the Steyr AUGA3 model.
The rifle has a grenade launcher and inbuilt attachments for various sighting systems. Arms experts say its main competitor is the Heckler and Koch G36 assault rifle.
Najib said with full manufacturing rights located in Malaysia, Malaysians would acquire the skills to develop the weapon system to a higher degree of technical sophistication.
Chee Eng Boon, chief executive officer of SME Aerospace Sdn Bhd, a unit owned by NADI, told reporters that the production of the Steyr AUGA3 rifle would begin by the end of the year.
SME has produced the earlier Steyr AUGA1 since 1992 under licence, he said.
Chee said Malaysia hoped to export the AUGA3 rifle to Australia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia and Oman. "We hope to explore new markets and produce up to 15,000 units per year."
Christian Simku, Steyr Mannlicher manager, said Malaysia was picked to produce the Steyr rifles and pistols because it had a proven track record and the new weapon had potential.
"Australia and many Middle East countries are interested in the latest rifle," he said, adding that each weapon cost some 2,000 dollars. -
Heading is wrong as Malaysia HAD BEEN producing AUGs since early 1990s.
However, what is new is that Steyr is apparently stopping production in Austria and moving it to Malaysia. -

very powerful and sleek looking weapon ... accuracy upto 700 yards ...
Handled them as an armourer back in my active days .... the Steyr SSG was my fondest ...

Very smooth piece of hardware and well balanced in the hands ... the cocking action is very smooth and silent ... far superior to the M16 ...."one shot one kill" -

Hey guys,I dunnoe if I'm right,but i saw this commando sniper and his spotter holding a sniper rifle similar to the Accuracy International PM in Changi area when i was jogging with my fren there.Coz,it sure does not look like the SSG69.Anyway,can anyone confirm if the SAF deploys the Accuracy International PM?
Next,any one have any idea does the SAF empoly a .50cal. Sniper Rifle?Coz it would sure be hell man.WOOHOO!!!! -

Guys, I have only seen the Accuracy Int'l AW in action before and the fellas giving me a show were very proficient at hitting the targets...
Further, can anyone tell me if Target Identification is a big deal in Sniping? I mean do you need to actually tell 2 people apart, i.e. if its 2 Chinese fellas of the same height, is it necessary to be able to I.D. them before engagement?
Would the conditions still hold for a Night Engagement? How would they change? -
AI PM is a very sleek and menacing sniper platform. Held it but no firing.. haha..
As for the SSG69, fired 5 shots of blanks during one of the SAFTI open hse a year or 2 back (memory failing) .
Apparently the "sniper" in charge, taught me how to reload the weapon after firing each round.
"ok.. you must use your thumb to press down on the scope, then 2nd finger to lift the bolt handle, then pull back, then push forward again"
AHHHH!!! since when can u move the damn scope after zeroing?! -

to me it is just mobe your right hand from trigger with plam facing sky. use plam to push the handle up and curl you hand to slide
the bold/slide rear ward and push it forward to chamber another
round. ready to fire again. while all tese action is going on, you're looking thru the scope on to the target .
we're trained to rapid fire (5 and 10 rounds) in engaging the bull
at 500 and 600 meter. -
