Beyond BMT, as a former OCS instructor of both Poly and JC trainees I would definitely say Poly grads perform better on average as combat troops than JC grads. I myself was a top school JC grad, trained by Poly batch officers.
Poly trainess are, on average, more fit, mentally tougher, better endurance, better field skills, better ground command and control, better with equipment. HOWEVER, JC grads are able to think outside of the box better, have more potential for command and staff appointments, better presenters and better communicators.
I was ITD instructor from 1985 to 1987. Trained scholar batch, obese batch, Poly batch and everything in-between. I even taught boy scouts from some 10+ years. Differences between the batches is evident, Poly batch are more worldy wise, A-Levels are weaker and haven't got a clue. What counts is can they be soliders?
I have a friend who went OOC on second to last week of OCS, why? because he was too independent. Even though he was a President Scout etc. What the SAF needs is people to do the job, not arm-chair generals etc.
A mother once had a chat on the MRT with me as I was returning from my in-camp in uniform. "My son is good with computers and has some experience with programming. Will he be posted to do something like that during his NSF?"
Sorry mum! SAF game plan, fill out your building blocks , i.e. infantry battalion with whatever fit warm bodies you get. With the minimum number of riflemen, some officers to lead them, enuff NCOs to get the rabble pointing their weapons the correct direction, a CO to take the heat, a CSM to shout at you (dare you cross his parade square without his permission) we have a SIR.
Add the support arms like tin cans (armour), the noisy fellas (Arty), Singtel (signals), pusedo thai construction workers (engineers) etc etc. You have you basic combined arms division.
We need an army to hold the ground. Maybe some who take the vertical taxi to work (guards), or those who do silly things like jumping out of a particularly good working aricraft (cdo) adds some color with their multi color barets during the NDP.
Anyway I digress, no difference between the Air levels or the Poly pots that would matter cause what the SAF needs is sufficient fear and desperation not to f##k up (and do weekend guard duty) to maintain a credible fighting force.
Myself, I prefer the Hokkien Peng, Tamil Tigers and Malay silat exponents who populate my platoon anytime cause when the s**t hits the fan and the flag goes up the pole, only the man on your left and right matter (just make sure he is not behind you with a loaded weapon and the safety off, I have had my fair share of misfires; courtesy of the platoon fumble king who is in my section). Whatever your experience, wait till you do your third in-camp, thats when you realize that these clowns will be in the same foxhole when it comes down to the crunch.
(no offence to those easily miffed about being the pride of the SAF etc, we are all cannon fodder if any unit loses it when it counts)
