Project SpecterAs for F-19A, serial number AF81-0001, Specter One, its current location and mission are unknown. Several sources, close to the author, have stated seeing the F-19A during operations over Kosovo and recently in OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. Air Force officials do admit that Specter One is still in service and is only used when absolutely necessary. i remember playing a DOS-based PC game in 1990 called F19 Stealth Fighter.....
it was my fav combat flight sim game then... -
i think F22 is the lastest model and US is develop a prototype X-31 for future generation fighter...

the F19 was the press name for the ruomoured black plane flying out of groom lake....after 1 of the F-117 prototypes crashed into a hotel...the press gave that plane the name because of the skip from the F18 to the F20.It is however the F117 that was revealed to be the F19 somewhere in 1990?Originally posted by wd1:isn't F-19A the name for the F-117 back when it was only a rumour?
And the X31 is a US-German prototype to test 3d thrust vectoring....not sure where the project is now but i think after 2 or 3 plane crashes it got cancelled.....it was to test and gather data on planes with high AoA -

On an interesting note, Lockheed already had a stealth aircraft, the F-117 Nighthawk, flying at the Tonopah Test Range, Nevada. But since both aircraft teams were sworn to secrecy, neither knew of each otherÂ’s existence

This happened to the HB 1002 aka the 2nd prototype interestingly enoughSpecter Six was also destroyed in a training accident in 1986 when pilot, Capt. Dirk “Squarejaw” Pottenger over stressed the airframe in a 15g turn and catastrophic airframe damage occurred. Luckily, Squarejaw did eject safely and now in the Guinness Book of World Records as the only human to survive a 15g ejection from an aircraft.
HB1001 aka the 1st prototype was lost when the land gear got stuck...pilot bailed out...was knocked unconscious in the process....Specter Two was stripped of it components and was towed to the flight line fire pit for fire training and of last report was completely destroyed after one fire exercise due to the carbon fiber make up of the aircraft.
the prototype for the 1st production plane crashed right after take off.....due to some ass plugging the computer wires wrongly..the plane yawed instead of pitching....
1 F117 was lost in a crash in a hill.... so there....

The F-19 was the name given speculatively to the "rumoured" (then) Stealth fighter by those not in the know. Reason is as Gedanken said, there was a gap between the F-18 and F-20. Hence it seemed logical at that time that a new Stealth fighter would be called F-19.
One of the rumoured reasons for the F-117s unique designation is due to the fact that when the USAF tested captured Soviet MiGs/Sukhois out of the infamous 'Area 51', they were given the type designations F-112 to F-116. F-117 was to disguise the true nature of the aircraft and pass it off as a new Soviet type the Americans got their hands on
As for the other gaps in the US fighter designation series
F-17 - Loser of the LWF competition won by the F-16. By Northrop. Only the YF-17 existed. Later formed the basis of the F/A-18
F-19 - See above
F-21 - Designation given to the IAI Kfirs leased by the US Navy for Adversary training -

the last flight was recently when it tested a new way to land fighters

Wow! So safe to say that the F-19A never existed? That plane looked good to me though.
