How to get selected for OCS when in BMT?

signing on is just like signing a contract with any other organisations to work, hence i do not consider it as signing one's freedom away. the nature of the work may entail some loss in personal time but when u signed, it should haf been taken into account in ur consideration as part of the job. -

well, in a way, we all haf to weigh our priorities lor. if the personal time is quite impt, o cos den perhaps one would haf to think twice b4 commiting. but also do take into consideration that as a regular the actual working hrs is 8-5 too, o cos the exact nature depends on the vocation and job scope.Originally posted by kY|e-_-o:i did.. rather i feel it is a huge loss in personal time..

Sadly Jc students get all the priority again....Never mind I will still submit an application for the LSA after the result of my final sem. is released. mm.. may i ask what are your poly results like? mostly As or Bs?
from your nick, i assume that your are from np's biomedical engineering... hi.. i'm from np biotech.. hee
even though i got mostly Bs for my results and got a nice SAT score, i lost to my frens in entering ntu in terms of poly and o level results even when i aced them in SAT.. ( why did the govt suddently remove SAT?... ) they were all single pointers in o lvls and score mostly As and ADs..
kinda regret not goin to jc in the first place.. jc pple seem to be able to have anythin they wan...
so how are you going to go about signin on and applying for LSA? maybe you would like to share with me cos im also interested.. hee.. -

. I got mostly As (20) and nearly got single digit for my O level (L1R4).
I have to believe with you that jc pple are able to have everything they wan, that is one of the reasons why i joined poly last time even though my grades are good to make it to JC. However now if someone is deciding whether if to go Poly or JC, I would tell the person to go JC, simply because all the good things are left for JC students. -

go to ocs and apply to be an intelligence officer.. if i manage to make it to ocs that is.. try my best
mm.. i realli regret not goin to jc when i had the chance....settled for a diploma.. but since it has come down to this.. i still have to make the best out of it.. hee
anyway i cant go overseas.. financial problems.. i still have to pay the bank for sponsoring my poly education.. hai..
so i was hopin for a place in local uni and get an LSA.. to ease my financial burden.. mm.. can i get an LSA without a pre-confirmed place in local uni? and can i use an LSA to apply for a place? -

. Regarding the LSA, I guess they will only look at you Poly results to decide if to give you the award or not. However I am not very sure if LSA will give you advantage or not when applying for a place in Uni. -

Right now intelligence sounds interesting to me. Me not too interested in the combat side...however if become one also no prob lah. -

u wil haf to get a place by ur own merit - the LSA will be given to u if they see ur results as being good enuff for local uni, or u haf already secured a place at a local uni. the LSA itself wont help u gain entry into a local uni. o cos u can substitute tt with a recognised overseas uni, and top up the balance too -

Why decide to sign on right now ? It's a rather big decision and you all haven't even went through army life yet. It's not all guts and glory like in the movies. I had toyed with that idea before i went into NS, now I'm glad i didn't sign on. Simply because outfield life isn't exactly as what I had pictured before i entered. It wasn't all "go go go !!! " or "storm the front !!!" or "chiong ah !!!" ala CS and all the war movies.
There was the mosquitoes bites that were so numerous i'd think the bites i suffered in the army alone numbers in thousands. Then there was the long tactical marches, and most of all the digging (i can be a part time farmer liao with all my experience). And there's all the regimentation and politics b/w the appointment holders, and b/w NSF/regulars. I swear it's almost like your average office politics in a commercial company.
In any case, I was a spec in the infantry, and a lot of my spec frens signed on through SAFEC (now non-existant) for 10 years. 9 out of 10 want to break the bond after the 5 year mark. The 5 year mark is the earliest point in the contract where you can break the contract without having to pay back any money.
My advice, try the life. If you like it, then sign on. If you don't, you just saved yourself from the jaws of the SAF. If you're thinking about the money, you get backpay up to 6 months from the day you sign on. So no loss if you sign after you enter NS.
Anyway how to get selected for OCS ?
The computer test in CMPB is very important. If you didn't sign on, this will probably determine your vocation and rank in the SAF, along with your PES status. If you wanna go garang places like cdo/guards/infantry, choose the garang answers. Eg :
I would rather :
a) read a book
b) climb a mountain
c) go sky diving
I chose (b). Look where it got me. Infantry. For guards I would guess you have to be good in swimming too, so state you can swim 50 laps in the super long form to ask you to fill.
I would say the stupid computer test determines 95% of all NSF vocations. I've seen good soldiers become men, and cockanadens become officahs. So do the test properly. All those interviews, surveys, and peer appraisals in BMT are rubbish and probably end up as a statisic on some general's table. So unless you are :
a)really outstanding and extremely fit, or
b)the complete opposite of (a)
Your NSF fate is solely determined by that CMPB computer test.
In any case, I wouldn't say JC students have a higher chance of going into OCS. Because JC and poly students basically have different intake timings. JC peeps usually enlist in the first half of the year, poly peeps in the 2nd half. Officer selection is mostly independant of each other. You're not going to compete with the other JC/poly people, just within your own batch. -

First question, why do you want to be an officer?
Next, what makes you think you'd make a good one?
Lastly, what are you willingly to do to prove that?
Don't get me wrong, I'm trying to help you out here.
I don't really know what ARC's been telling you guys but just to clarify, officer life is not glamorous for most people. They all follow strict "time-tables", meaning they spend fixed times at one position before they move on. If you're the sort keen on adventure and want the "glamour" of being a leader in battle, it's better if you stay NSF or be a specialist instead. You only get to do the adventure bit for max 1.5 years, after that, if you're unlucky you end up as a ranking "clerk" in one of the HQs, doing plenty of paper work and secretary jobs.
FYI, for people aiming for anything higher than LTC, they must be government scholarship material and even then, it's no garauntee you will make it so far. Personally, I won't recommend joining IO before you actually get a feel of it. My CO tried to convince me to convert when I decided not to continue with my contract but the scheme was quite new and the route of advancement was real murky for the junior officers so you might end up hanta kaki on one position for longer than expected. not to be Anti anything but so what if you are a CLT? it just shows that yuo wanted to be in NCC. and that you stupidly did more NS than anyone else.
trust me lah, SAF like all govt organ is scholar biased. Either you are a scholar than can rise up, if not you have to be a frigging SOf and wait for high profile rescues.
there are so many people signing on now a days so its very competitive.
Plus with this many officers, career advancemkent very tough. -
From what i know the LSA is given to anyone in OCS who has already gotten a place in a local Uni and is willing to sign on.Meaning if u get a place into uni liao high chance u will get LSA....the reason why most students who get LSA's are jc students is because the ratio for jc to poly getting into a uni is skewed towards the jc students.
