Sounds like somone born after the mid-80s. Buck Rogers was one of the coolest sci-fi-bang-bang-flying-spaceship TV shows shown on (well, cool enough for this 8(?) year old at the time) SBC 5. Going further back, it started with a 40s/50s pulp comic strip about this guy, Buck Rogers, who goes up on a spaceflight and gets transported to the 25th century where he has many adventures with lusty spacewomen and fights husky space enemies and royally wins the space day.
If anyone has the larger scale Matchbox/Corgi model of the TV series fighter that Buck flew, pls give me a buzz, been wanting to get my hands on one for a long time.
