I don,t know how lasting the shoes are as I have just got my new balance M380 running shoes. Yes SAF has come a long way since the black rubber shoes of yesteryears or during my NS time.Where one size fits all at least now there's a choice based on the type of foot you have.
Buying a pair of running shoes should not be based on what colours or style or cosmetic look of the shoe. The whole purpose that there are two types of shoes from brooks and new balance is to suit the different types of foot that a soldier has. It's main purpose is to allow the foot to withstand the pounding and rigors of running and to prevent injuries.
The SAF brooks maximus running shoes is for normal foot.
The SAF new balance M380 running shoes is for flat foot or overpronators.(motion control) see below email from new balance I also checked with the emart shop auntie on this.
The following is a email reply I got from new balance on it's new SAF new balance shoes.

Hi Steve,
thank you for your mail and support for New Balance.
The current New Balance model for the military is M380BR, its based on
a
lightweight performance model, the M730 but a medial post has been
added
such that it caters for moderate overpronators as well.
If you are wearing the M855 at the moment, you should be pleased to
know
that it has been updated and just released as the M856 in Singapore.
Let us know if we can help further.
Best regards,
Arthur Ang

I do know that there is a brooks maximus cross trainer shoe on the market don,t know if the SAF brooks running shoe is based on this.
New balance and brooks both make good running shoes they just don,t spend so much $$$ on advertisement or multimillion dollar sportsmen endorsements like Nike and Reebok.
Brooks Beast, Brooks Addiction, and New balance 855 are some shoes that come to mind when getting shoes for overpronators or flat feet or heavy runners.
To know the type of foot you have, you can examine your footprint or you can spend $$ consulting a podiatrist(foot doctor) or just go to any free nike foot clinic giving free advice on your foot type.
Just my two cents
