Taipei - Taiwan staged a live-fire military drill ahead of large-scale wargames to be held by rival china, officials said yesterday.
Television footage showed artillery units firing at mock enemies trying to land on Penghu island chain in the Taiwan Strait.
China has repeatedly threatened to invade Taiwan should taipei ever declare independence.
Taiwan's army stayed tight-lipped on the latest military exercise, describing the drill as "routine".
The exercise came after Beijing-based New Express said China was gearing up for large-scale military wargames aimed at "taking-control of the taiwanese strait", with 18,000 troops and amphibious landing of tanks.
The Chinese exercises are to take place this month and next on Dongshan Island, just 150-nautical miles west of Taiwan's Penghu island.
Soldiers were deployed on Dongshan in mid-may where tanks and armoured personnel carriers had been practising amphibious landings daily - AFP

live-fire exercise is as good as 'clocking' & 'zeroing' all your weapons.
