Have posted in the following thread: http://www.sgforums.com/?action=thread_display&thread_id=81217Originally posted by sgFish:mmm i just sailed past CNB yesterday, and I saw LHD-2, if i'm not wrong is the USS Essex, docked at CNB, decks filled with sea stallions (?) and chinooks, plus a few planes on the aft part of its main deck.. anyone know what planes these are? that can take off from a helo carrier...
there were also large ships that were present there that were about the size of our LSTs (as they were parked next to them), i din see much, although one of them had a pennant number of 49, and if i remember correctly, it should be the USS Vincennes..although it din look much like a ticonderoga class to me..any other US or foreign large sized ships with the pennant number 49?
mmm i haven't been following the news recently as i was at sea..although i heard stuff abt Donald Rumsfeld visiting us..is that related to the visit?
thank you!
If I remember correctly, those should be Harrier jumpjets, unless the Marines have decided to replace them.Originally posted by sgFish:mmm i just sailed past CNB yesterday, and I saw LHD-2, if i'm not wrong is the USS Essex, docked at CNB, decks filled with sea stallions (?) and chinooks, plus a few planes on the aft part of its main deck.. anyone know what planes these are? that can take off from a helo carrier...

The ships are USS Essex (LHD 2), USS Juneau (LPD 10), USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43) and USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) as of June 1st. It was reported on the USN website. Theres also 2 Aegis destroyers and a Coast Guard ship for the CARAT exercise.
The aircraft on board the Essex would be CH-53 Sea Stallions, CH-46 Sea Knights (not CH-47 Chinooks), AV-8B+ Harrier IIs, AH-1 Cobras and UH-1 Hueys. From pictures and newsclips of Rumsfelds visit, there are also MH-60 Knighthawks on board.
ah ok..is the AV-8 going to be replaced by the VSTOL JSF in the future?Originally posted by Obersturmfuhrer:If I remember correctly, those should be Harrier jumpjets, unless the Marines have decided to replace them.
