ROSVOOROUZHENIE TO BOOST IGLA MISSILES SUPPLY TO ASIA-PACIFIC
The Russian Rosvoorouzhenie state company plans to expand the supply of the Igla mobile air defense systems to the Asia-Pacific market. The hope is based on a successful contract on the Singapore production of the Igla system on a basis of the Russian license and the related technical assistance, head of the Rosvoorouzhenie delegation Mikhail Heifits told RCAAM in an interview before leaving for Singapore on May 2.
The Igla promotion in Singapore started in 1996 after signing of a contract on the supply of 440 systems, the training of Singapore specialists and the joint research and development for a period of 2002. The 440 systems were supplied to Singapore in 1997.
Two contracts on the supply of 12 Dzhigit launcher units for the Igla system and the placing of the Igla system on a foreign-made chassis were signed in March and May of 1997. The launcher units were supplied in January 1999.
A draft contract on the Igla production in Singapore on a basis of the Russian license and with the Russian technical assistance was submitted to the Singapore side in May 1997. The contract was signed, and 3,000 missiles are expected to be assembled within five years, Kheifits said.
A new contract was signed in February 1999 on the supply of targeting equipment and the Russian assistance to the Igla shooting with the use of the Dzhigit launcher units. The shooting will be done at training grounds in South Africa rented by the Singapore Defense Ministry, the Rosvoorouzhenie executive said.
