Increase defence budget

The resulting inclusion would also serve to increase leg strength in troops who would be forces to use it as standard issue.It would a little extra weight,but when is excercise not good?

seriously,I would not want to carry around that much weight,but he does have a point.8 billion a year?I don't think we have any real need just yet for that sort of budget,unless we were in an arms race,and neither are we in the same situation as the Israelis.
Still,that money would probably be good in expanding the RSN and allowing us to protect the Malacca Straits and the South China Sea,as it seems the Indonesians and Malaysians can't be bothered to do so. -

Toy that SAF need in the near future:
350 light tank
4 E3 type AC
40 NGF
4 submarine
This will cost SG a hole in the pocket. -

It doesn't take alot of time for soldiers to calculate their odds of survival by simply sitting on top of their M113 when moving around in the Mekong delta.........
You wait for a better APC or up armoured M113 to come then fight?
I think alot of ppl is limiting themselves with this hardware traps!
We cannot enslave ourselves into thinking that without technology or the 'right' hardware SAF will be less effective.
You look at the Israelis......they are still using very old hardware to face and overcome real and current threats.[/b] -
National security is important but there are other priorities as well.
I think singapore already dedicate a lot to defence in both fiscal dollars as well as manpower (NS and ICTs).
FUrther increases will mean that other aspect of the country eg healthcare and education will suffer. -
Singapore has a 6% cap on defence. Our GDP last year was $112 billion, so the most we can spend is $6 billion +
Anyway $8 billion is unrealistic, you have to remember Israel has to spend something between 20-35% of its GDP on defence, and much of it is subsidised by US taxpayers. -

Interestingly, the technology and expertise of body armour has largely been spearheaded by the Law Enforcement agencies, rather than the Military.
Body armour can be made to specification to whatever threats you would like. Typically, the heavier the threat round, the greater the protection. But the trade-off is in determining your threat. If you set your protection level too high, you are going to get a bulky and uncomfortable piece of equipment that the individual soldier is not going to use most of the time.
If you set it too low, than it is just extra weight that doesn't perform and worse, you offer your soldiers false confidence in wearing it.
