How does one stop a runaway tanker ship?

About the sand.......
Normally they flood the ballast tanks with water and the dock sinks. To re-float it.......you pump the water out.
What if you replace the bulk of the water with sand in compartments above the water line.......it doesn't have to be the whole dock sinking....... maybe just the bow.
So you load the bow with sand and then let it out when you want to raise the 'fish'....
Anyways, regaining control of ship, using it's own anchors to change course if all else fails......you get more control here.
OR one can have these sea anchor parafoils deployed if the tanker's anchors are not available.
With the dock too many ifs. -
aiyo..... just use the apache knock 16 big giant holes near the ships water line... lah...
i would love to see a ship move with 16 gapeing holes flooding...
or.. we can fire the hellfire in a verticle line and break the ship in 2 right down the middle...
once we show those terrorist...we dont give a damn about sinking ships... they would think twice before trying it again. -
Activate all the planes of the RSAF as well as the RSN flotilla and utilise all available firepower to disable or destroy the ship.
That should stop any ship on the planet. -
for all u guys know Fairyland may just be a terrorist asking us how we would respond to such a situation so that he and his fellow tangos know the countermeasures when they actually take over the fully-laden tanker
for a start i think a "panic button" for oceangoing ships should be made mandatory, like in US-bound airliners. once the crew suspects a terrorist infiltration they could press the panic button, then the nearest navy ship would be activated to escort the hijacked tanker to a safe location. -

would read this thread and come to realise that all the scenarios have been thoroughly investigated and the odds of succeeding would be low very low.
Easier to score points with the BIG MAN by robbing a bank or armoury not neccessarily in Singapore. -

Many big oil tankers are double-hulled to prevent easy sinking. Torpedoes, missiles or mines may not work effectively.

Maybe someone should design some thing like underwater huge parachute like which you can shoot and hook to the tanker, and the chute open underwater and produce the drag to slow it down.

Just my two cents worth;
I heard that a huge VLCC takes a kilometre or more to come into a complete stop from top speed. Can anyone verify this?
If I were a terrorist whose intend is to use the VLCC as a ramming/explosive assert, it would make sense for me to head straight towards my target at full trottle doesn't it?

Get a squadron of these torpedo boat to sink the tanker.They r fast and cheap!

How abt, using a guided topedo and just ram the screws, rendering them completely useless thus stopping the ship. At the same time totally undectable if we uses our subs (finally a use for them )
I'm no technical expert however to me, i think this is workable, will need your 2 cents in its usage.

A low tech way for terrorists to attack Singapore...........
Take a group of like minded ppl say approx. 20 guys or gals.........
Disguised as tourists........come in by coach, airplane or otherwise.......
Don't have to come altogether.
Meet at CK Tang basement - make it a weekend on a GSS...... pretend to shoppers........
Goto knife section each one pick one or two knifes or choppers......
Start chopping. Cut off exits and continue chopping away.
If each can chop and kill 5 ppl, grandmas, grandpas, babies, kids, parents....... they kill at least 100.
Easy! Too easy!!!
ALL KNIFES AND SHARP UTENSILS SHOULD BE SECURED AND NOT PUT ON OPEN DISPLAY! -
