U got a point here lah.......provided the government can sponsor a thing called sign on for sports like what the regulars r doing 10 year stint or career....Originally posted by Moustache:In relation to the recent reduction in NS period, the reason provided was that we have sufficient manpower to maintain security with new technology and 3G soldier.
As such, would it make sense if for every batch of NSmen, about 300-400 recruit to be enlisted to do nothing but SPORTS. They would train, sleep, eat sports on their selected field.
Advantage :
1. Home grown sportsman, lesser reliance on foreign import
2. No distraction such as school work, girlfriend problem etc
3. Full focus on achieving results
4. May make Dream 2010 happen.
5. Excellent diet control in SAF.
They would be subjected to the same strict SAF discipline. Any slackers in training is subjected to extra training, corrective training over the weekend as with other soldier.....
Winning medals for Singapore in International arena is NATIONAL SERVICE in my opinion.
What's your thought.
Not enough birthrate liao hor and you training to defend the country or going to the olympic? Not many people like sports hor, like someone said the mentality is still there serve and fark off but what can you do besides serve and fark off? If nobody serves and fark off and everyone so loyal and sign on, the economy die liao.Originally posted by Moustache:In relation to the recent reduction in NS period, the reason provided was that we have sufficient manpower to maintain security with new technology and 3G soldier.

Only those who excel in sports in school, have remarkable fitness will be selected. I am only suggesting another avenue to serve our nation, ie in sports...Originally posted by Ayukat:Not enough birthrate liao hor and you training to defend the country or going to the olympic? Thank you for your honest comments.Originally posted by Moxie:Won't work - not when the SAF is a military organization, & every enlistee is foremost a soldier.
For your suggestion to work (in the Singapore context), we'll need to legally exempt such citizens from being drafted anywhere under the Total Defence umbrella. Which is actually feasible if we want it, given how we haven't conscripted women & older permanent residents. 400 athletes are also a minuscule compared to the SAF's 250,000 (50,000 active/regular), the SCDF's 30,000 (24,700 active/regular), & Home's 34,000 (12,000 active/regular).
But how would you "replenish" the 400 as an ongoing process, instead of it being rendered a one-off enlistment? You can't realistically prescribe a short 2-year stint as if it's a mass factory, & if you keep adding 400 more every couple of years, there'll be an exponential increase in numerical numbers - to no end.
yes, but the example you provided are far in between. What i am suggesting is a concentrated, focus effort to groom our own sporting talent. Over the year, i am sure many sporting talents have been overlooked and gone down the drain. I have witness many very good soccer players during my NS, but they have never been cultivated nor groomed. It's a pity.Originally posted by Moxie:It's an interesting idea, but I have to say that the existing concept is already flexible enough.
With NSFs, no matter what service you're in, you go through BMT (or its equivalent) & then learn a vocation, after which you can be basically attached out to the respective sports associations.
I dunno know how much attractive it still is, but there's another more fruitful "win-win" means: sign on as a regular (non-officer), pick up a trade (thus drawing a salary), while juggling with your sporting speciality at the same time. I believe the uniformed services are receptive to this, as long as you don't hold a high or key appointment. But are there such aspirants nowadays, with better academic qualifications & all?
I made acquaintance of two such examples before. Vincent Subramaniam, the former national football coach, was a MT-line sergeant in my old NSF outfit; he was forever attached out to SAFSA & presumably FAS &, whenever he returned to camp, we used to joke that it's only to do his share of BOS duties. The other is national shooter Shirley Lim, another senior-NCO regular who was one of the SOA instructors during our ICTs; I understand that she had a tougher time balancing between both endeavors.
That is if he is a national player, my point is using NS time to groom our sports talent...Originally posted by octega:From what I know, if the person is a National Player, the SAF will definately give him time off for his training.
That already been done long ago, usually the sports folks will get be exempted from the normal duty, have seen a couple of them, who usually not even in the camp, just come back a few day every few months to update their admin, they totally disappear, althought they are in the platoon list.Originally posted by Moustache:In relation to the recent reduction in NS period, the reason provided was that we have sufficient manpower to maintain security with new technology and 3G soldier.

my point is using NS time to groom our sports talentIt's outside of any of the uniformed services' business, to be honest, with regards to training & deploying conscripts.
Exactly, national service should not be restricted to only defence and security..it should emcompass, sports excellence, civil defence, baby making (that's a separate topic altogether). Anything that will do good for the benefit of our Nation...hence NATIONAL SERVICE, providing service to our nation..Originally posted by Joshua1975:Maybe National Service should change to for all going in to the Force if that what you think NS is.
