i can understand area cleaning, and wanting to instill discipline, orderliness and conformity etc. but wtf is the point of having such a bloody big cabinet when you're using less than 50% of it's space.
the toiletries shelf is the most ridiculous of all, so much space, and all you can have is a fork n spoon, shaver, toothbrush, toothpaste, soapbox, mug and 1 toilet roll? and we're not even allowed to place our own shaver and toothbrush/paste inside?
well. this issue is really up to ur PS or sectcomd or whoever sets the guidelines, and has nothing to do with standby bed in general - other coys will still have standbys but they prob have a different set of guidelines for usage of the space.
so if u think its a silly guideline, u can feedback to ur superiors, mabbe through ur plt IC or something. -

i'm in orion, i find that we're quite relax, that's how my bunkmates feel too. or maybe we're just better able to take things in our stride.

Have you done Remedial Training when the 2 IC (think he only just ORD recently) is the conducting? Have you done 100 chin ups, 300 hula claps, then another 50 chin ups, followed by 50 dive bombers, some sets of push-ups, followed by a sprinkling of step-ups (100), then some crunches (60 counts of 4), before doing some more push-ups, then burpees, all in one session of two hours?
Ninja is tough training, and also tough welfare: we had TV after ceasefire for the day range!
So have you made any friends at Ninja yet? I remembered when I was there, Orion and Ninja were best neighbours, and we cheered each other for no reason... -
i can never understand the obsession in comparing which company, unit, or whatever, is more siong than another, especially within the same school, or same formation. is it supposed to fuel one's sense of manhood or pride?

frens like bo leh, for some reason they seem very anti orion. got few times i wanna chat wif them one, coz always go over there use their water cooler, (throat infection, prefer drink warm water). but they all face like sibuei fierce and unfrenly one
previous wed nite, we had ippt on thurs morning, then i think they just return from range or field camp, around 10pm like that. sibuei kaopeh. keep on shouting and all that nonsense until 12.30+

even inter-coy also will have competition mah, this platoon do what, we must do better or wat etc. but our platoon guys really dun like platoon 3 or 4 very much. coz many times they cause alot of problems, like go swimming shoes never put properly, the worse is during book out got few p3/4 idiots go and sit on the 3rd row, kena screw by SSM, then entire coy disruptees tio confine 1 weekend.
the female recruit we have is becoz she sign on as infantry leader. coming wed when BMT start, suppose to have another 4 more gers joining us, but heard from her that 3 of them break bond liao.

Just my two cents worth.
I was an instructor at the old ITD (camp 3 P. Tekong) back in 85-87.
What you are subject to, the entire platoon paying for one person's mistakes, never good, clean, fast or even loud enough is almost always mistaken for 'tekan' or 'sado masochistic' behaviour control. The real (seldom understood) reason is to grind you down then build you up. The process is supposed to make you mentally stronger, not feeble bullet catches. To make a solider really charge at a bayonet dummy is meaningless unless the fear is overcomed. When you are at your most tired, your most hungry, your most painful state is when your buddy needs you to do the impossible.
It is not a mindless grind to make us all sausages of equal diameter or stuffed with sh**. But questioning an order can prove more fatal than you think. Take the Immediate Ambush Drill. Basic Instinct makes you either freeze, cringe and take cover or worst of all run away from the threat. The best response is to charge into the enemy position. This takes conditioning and to overcome the primal fear of pain or death. That is what the true aim of these 'tekan' methods seeks to achieve (in an ideal world).
Once a recruit (from a scholar batch) asked if I needed to give my instructions through shouts or threats. The only reason why we put on a gruff image (other then misapprehension of what is macho) is that in conditioning my boys (yes, I always 'adopt' my recruits for their BMT as my boys) to respond to instructions to are communicated asap. Can you imagine if your NCO crowering behind the base of the next rubber tree asking using a even tone "Mr XXX, can you kindly shift to the next cover so that Mr YYY can find space between us, and at the same time please give us more of your covering fire"? (well trained soliders will easily know the SAF version of that order).
Anyone who has been through the Section Assult Course at BCTC (the final grind for NSMen) will know at an instance what is it like to be at the sharp end of the blade. Any mistake costs lives this is proven time and time again. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, hope we don't have to pay too high a price to see which is a better method of winning a war. In case anyone has any doubts training in the SAF is to fight and win a war with less casualities. -
