KUALA LUMPUR: China has agreed to transfer its expertise in the very short-range missiles to Malaysia, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
However, he said the transfer of technology depended on other factors currently being considered by the Government.
"We have basically reached a principle agreement to acquire the technology from China but it is not a purchase yet because the Government is still considering the details," he said after witnessing a signing ceremony between SME Ordnance Sdn Bhd, Aneka Bekal Sdn Bhd and China National Precision Machinery Import and Export Corporation at the Imperial Sheraton Hotel Monday. -
Are the chinese doing this to spike us over that visit? This doesn't spells good for us.

anyway i wonder what is the missile purpose..
by right if the missile range exceed 200km , singapore has the right to protest.. anyway if malaysia buys...the missile will surely cause instability in the region...den i think singapore will buy missile

the term "very short range missiles" is very ambiguous. even a crossbow dart can be a "missile"...
when i first read the article i was thinking of very short range SAMs, as in VSHORADS n stuff. -

What makes you think Sg must buy missiles to counter theirs? It won't be smart getting short-range missiles (i presume they are referring to SRBMs) if the are just armed with conventional warheads, waste of resources. If they are so facinated with missiles, why not get more rocket artillery? -

KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has agreed in principle to purchase medium-range surface-to-air missiles from China and in return China will transfer its technology in very short-range air defence system to Malaysia.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the procurement would be made under the 9th Malaysia Plan (2006-2009) as part of the continous Armed Forces Modernisation Programme.
"Details of the procurement and offset programme will be finalised later should Malaysia give its full commitment," he told a news conference after witnessing the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on the matter.
China National Precision Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CPMIEC) is offering the FN-6 very short-range air defence system to Malaysia should the country purchase its KS-1A, the medium-range surface-to-air missiles.
FN-6, the shoulder-launched missile, has an engagement range capability of 6km and altitute range of 4km while KS-1A, while the vehicle-launched missile has an engagement range of 50km and altitude range of 27km.
The industrial offset programme of the FN-6 offered to Malaysia is inclusive of special test facilities, universal equipment, special tools, manufacturing process document, training and technical support, and capable of an annual output of 100 FN-6 missiles.
The MoU was signed between CPMIEC, SME Ordance Sdn Bhd, the local company to implement the offset programme, and Aneka Bekal Sdn Bhd, a local agent that promoted the programme.
Over the past couple of years, the Armed Forces have been evaluating medium-range surface-to-air missiles and shortlisted the BUK-M1-2 from Russia, SAMP/Aster 30 from France, MIM-23B Improved Hawk and Hawk-Amraam from United States and KS-1A from China.
The medium-range surface-to-air missiles are crucial for reinforcing the layer between short-range air defence systems and manned air combat aircraft.
Malaysia had procured very short-range air defence systems from Russia and Pakistan as well as a short-range air defence missile system from United Kingdom for its air defence requirement during the 8th Malaysia Plan (2001-2005).
The president of CPMIEC, Prof Wang Bingyan, said China had ofered to conclude the KS-1A transaction on flexible payment terms, including counter-trade, barter and deferred payments.
Malaysia is currently focussing on developing its defence technologies towards achieving greater self-reliance as it did not want to remain merely as a consumer of foreign defence technologies.
The MoU was signed by Prof Wang for CPMIEC, Senior Vice President SME Ordnance Sdn Bhd Gen (Rtd) Datuk Seri Mohd Sharom Nordin and Chairman of Aneka Bekal Datuk Muhammad Hamzah.
Also present were Army Chief Gen Datuk Pahlawan Mohd Azumi Mohamed and China's Ambassador to Malaysia, Wang Chungui.

Malaysia has agreed in principle to purchase medium-range missiles from China, which in return will transfer technology on very short-range air defence to the country, Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak said Tuesday.
The procurement of the surface-to-air missiles was part of the armed forces modernisation program and would be made under the Ninth Malaysia Plan from 2006-2009, he was quoted as saying by Bernama news agency.
"Details of the procurement and offset programme will be finalised later should Malaysia give its full commitment," he said after the signing of a memorandum of understanding on the purchase. The cost of the weapons were not revealed.
Under the pact between China National Precision Machinery Import and Export Corp. and two local companies, CNPMIEC would transfer technology on production of the FN-6 shoulder-launched missiles to Malaysia if it purchases its medium-range KS-1A missiles, Bernama said.
This includes provisions for special test facilities, tools, manufacturing process document, training and technical support.
CNPMIEC president Wang Bingyan said China had also offered to conclude the KS-1A transaction on flexible payment terms, including counter-trade, barter and deferred payments.
Malaysia has procured very short-range air defence systems from Russia, Pakistan and Britain under the Eight Malaysian Plan from 2001-2005, Bernama said.
The government has in the past two years embarked on a major arms procurement spree, ranging from Russian Sukhoi fighter jets and British missile systems to French submarines and Polish attack tanks.
Malaysia has denied its weapons build-up could spark an arms race in the region, saying the purchases are simply designed to upgrade its defences and that it has no aggressive intentions. -

The Tactical High Energy Laser (THEL) program is a key component of U.S.-Israel strategic cooperation designed to counter short-range rockets. Israel faces a constant threat from Hezbollah-guerillas staging attacks on its northern border. The THEL, still in developmental stages, will serve to protect Israeli troops and civilians in advent of these affronts.The THEL precursor, the Nautilus, destroyed a short-range rocket in flight during testing in February 1996 at a site in New Mexico, nine months after the project was launched. This was the first time a laser has ever destroyed a ballistic missile.
In April 1996 the U.S. agreed to accelerate high energy laser development after Hezbollah guerrillas fired over two dozen of Katyusha rockets at Israel during its 17-day period operation against the terrorists. Soon after, both President Clinton and former U.S. Defense Secretary William Perry have pledged to expand work on the THEL.
THEL will be a transportable laser weapon system which will be used by both the Israeli Defense Forces and eventually will have applications for the U.S. Army. The U.S. Army Space and Strategic Defense Command and the Israel Ministry of Defense are managing the program and the test program is conducted at the High Energy Laser Test Facility (HELSTF) in New Mexico.
The system is capable of intercepting both the Katyushas in the hands of the Hizbullah in Lebanon and the Kassam missiles fired at Israel from Gaza, controlled by the Palestinian Authority. These missiles are also liable to be stationed in the West Bank, from where they could threaten Ben Gurion Airport.
The choice of the Israeli and US companies' concept was a preliminary step in producing an operational prototype of the MTEL, the mobile version of the THEL. Production is scheduled for completion in 2004, and the project is slated to end in 2007.
The laser could be in use in 2007. Since development began in 1996, the Army, the Israeli Defense Ministry and TRW had spent $250 million on the project through 2002
The (MTHEL) Mobile Tactical High-Energy Laser is a short-range weapon being developed with Israel, which wants it to destroy Katyusha rockets fired at its border villages by Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon. The weapon looks like a searchlight. In tests during late 2002, the Army used the high-energy laser to heat artillery shells, which exploded in flight. In earlier tests, the laser shot down 25 Katyushas, both singly and in salvos. Artillery shells generate far less heat than rockets do and are more difficult to track. Also, because rockets are pressurized, they are easier to blow up than shells.
The MTHEL is being designed to protect soldiers from artillery and mortar rounds and rockets. the laser system can be packed into about three tractor-trailer loads, he said. The next phase will shrink it to less than one load. Ultimately, it will be small enough to mount on a Humvee. -

I feel China should just forget taiwan and move on. I'm trying very hard to imagine a Taiwanese province under a "confederated China" armed to the teeth with American weaponry.Yeah perhaps you'll see PRC soldiers using M4 Carbines and TOW-2 on their Russian helos.It simply wont happen.Taiwan will breakaway again.If you want them to lay down arms, it aint gonna be easy.May God bless the Taiwan Straits.China got themselves into this mess, they better clean it up in a proper way.Not worth to throw away 30yrs of progress.
