Back in the old company line, the saying was "Can means can" - you're there to kill the bugger, not impress the hell out of him with your Gucci go-faster kit.
I'll admit that laser sights were a great extra, simply because it meant that my ammo could go a longer way, and I used my own Mark II because the bloody issued bayonet couldn't cut butter, but apart from that, the standard kit of 1990 allowed me to do as good a job as anyone. Why do I need SOPMOD if the old Colt Commando could leave the other guy just as dead? If it goes bang when you squeeze the trigger and the round doesn't miss by a country mile, you're good to go.
Now, if they offered portable air-conditioning, I'd be happy to listen.
As much as I'd like to claim credit, I have to attribute the phrase to Andy McNab.Originally posted by HENG@:"... not impress the hell out of him with your Gucci go-faster kit." another choice bit.

Yeah, it's interesting to contrast Bravo Two Zero with Eye of the Storm, written by his RSM Peter Radcliffe.Originally posted by chunyong:he is a bugger who wrote stories like nobody business

Hmm! I share the same sentiments but at the sametime disagree on certain points. While its true that no soldier should look like a French soldier. A soldier, however, should be provided with kits that they can rely on during any situation. A soldier should also be confident in both his skill & his weapon, so yeah, even with a colt commando a confident soldier can still get the job done.Originally posted by Gedanken:Man, what's all the fuss here? SOPMOD vs Colt Commando, if the M4 gives you a slight better edge in a fire fight over a colt commando, would you not use it? I seriously believed that no soldier is doing their job with suicide in their mind. So if a gear or a new weapon give them that additional probability of returning home, why not invest in it?![]()
