The 8 to 5 vocations

I am going to POP soon and hope to get into a vocation that allows me to serve only from 8 to 5pm everyday as I have a ongoing business outside to take care of before i was enlisted. Are chances getting a 8 to 5 vocation high if I dun get into a command school and what are the vocations available?

or extenuating family situations which require you to stay out i.e. you're married or your presence at home is vital (father/mother sick and you need to care for them... etc. etc.)

PES status may not be an issue. Its your vocation & also which camp. I'm C2. Some of my friends were C9. We were all mechanics & our unit was stay in. Eveyday can book out at 6pm but must book in by 2359.

Pes E vocation is always admin work right?

No such thing as 8-to-5. It's 5:30 last parade at the earliest, & with all the routine-orders briefings & commuting to do, I doubt you'll reach your destination anytime before 7:15 - unless you're really lucky. That's presuming you don't end up with a unit that requires staying in & periodic night-duties (esp. if you're rear-echelon staff complementing the combat personnel).
Full-time NS's gonna be your day job, any which way you look at it. You could use the nights off to attend courses or part-time into business, but beware that misplaced priorities could backfire into your civilian-moonlighting commitments. -
Hiaz...in the army where got 8 to 5 one. You are on "standby" all the time one, even sleeping. One call from your officer, you think you can continue sleeping meh, you BMT already must already know this fact..
Some more even DXOs (non-uniformed personnels) have to do overtime, you think leh.... -

Unless its some super bochap unit, if not the CSM is hardly the authority to grant stay out. In my unit it was the Hd GS & in some unit the S1. CSM small fry, no power to grant stay out. Yep, even if stay out, you are still on "standby", stay out doesn't mean you can ignore phone calls from camp, bo chup army. You are still required to come back to camp in the dead of the night when you are told to do so.

Clerk (most units. some units may require stay-in, like PLAB. certain 'garang' combat units like 1CDO requires top people like CO, CI etc to leave first before stay-out personnel can leave.) Storeman (probably about 50% of units, and it is usually a service unit like GSMB, HQ INF. most combat units require stay in.) Vehicle Mechanic 'B' or 'C' (depending on your unit.) RP (again, depending on your unit.) On-course personnel usually get to stay out for the period of their course. However, the pool has just got smaller as HQ S & T has now required trainees to stay in. Note also that most combat schools are stay-in.
stay out units: CMPB HQ MINDEF HQ INF HQ MES OETI
staying out is possible if you have a medical/family/personal problem that warrants it. it is likely that you may want to consult your PC or MO about this. if your medical condition is of such severity that you have to stay out or can only do clerical work, do ask your specialist to write a memorandum regarding your condition so that the MO can make arrangements for you.
clerical work is usually taken by PES CxL9 or E personnel. note that tis is not a definitive rule: PES E personnel can undertake vehicle maintenance, store management or combat supervising duties, while there are clerks around with other PES status, including PES A and B. this is because the posting centre will post your vocation based not solely on your PES grading but on other specific physical/medical/psychological conditions, which are determined by the MO, on the advice of specialists if necessary. -

HQ SUP & TPT has required all trainees (driver, all sups & mechs) at Sembawang Camp (STTS) to stay in. even those attached to KBC for driving courses have to stay-in w.e.f. late june tis yr, with buses to bring them to and fro KBC every day. only those attached to OETI will stay out. tis is a new order, given by a new CO of course.Originally posted by LazerLordz:Just to add,

As above, it all depends on your unit.I heard that it's quite hard to get into the comms tech course at OETI.Very limited places.

If u in NAVY is 100% 8-5pm, if u r in ship vocation u can leave as early as 4 pm or even 12 pm.

BTW is it true that you can use your medical condition to apply for staying out?
Also, the guranette staying out there is a way -- Declare yourself 302 and they will not let you stay in........

I really don't understand why all the topic starters nowadays think the SAF is going to cater to them.

hm.. its REALLI VERY hard and rare for NSFs to get to stay out, especially for those with combat vocations, and especially since NS is now only 2 yrs.
come on! stay in is not THAT bad rite? i enjoyed staying in during my ns. in fact i liked it so much sometimes i don't go home after duty, i book in early and book out late.
all i can say is, again esp for NSF, don't keep dwelling on staying out. if u get it, well and good. if not, at least u wont be too disappointed.
